SPECIAL NEEDS Phones help disabled MOST of us take the telephone, like other modern conveniences, for granted: it’s easy to use, and simple to obtain. Those with disabilities may rely more than average on the telephone as a convenience — but standard telephone equipment may not meet their special needs. To assist disabled customers to select the best combination of equipment to suit their individual needs, B.C. Tel has established a Telecom Centre for Special Needs. Special needs telephone equipment can assist customers who have motion, speech, hearing or sight limitations. Someone with ar- thritis, for example, may find holding a telephone receiver painful to inflamed joints. Alternate equipment choices could include a lightweight headset or a_ hands-free speakerphone. At B.C. Tel'’s new centre, the specially trained staff can advise customers about equipment options, and will arrange demonstrations of different types of equipment. The Centre, located in the B.C. Tel Building at 3777 Kingsway in Burnaby, is wheelchair accessible — 1n- Couples or Single Adults who are Interested In fostering are invited to an information meeting. The Special Needs Centre has two roles, says supervisor Arden Honey. ‘‘In addition to consulting about equip- ment choices, we also help hearing or speech-impaired customers who use telephone devices for the deaf (TDD/TTY’s) interface with the Company.”’ Will You Ever Forget It? Not when you rearmnembet your special group events with TDD/TTY customers use devices similar to compact teletype units to transmit a typed message over telephone lines. Through a special TDD/TTY contact number, customers using the devices can contact the centre to order new service, discuss billing matters, report a telephone out of order, or obtain telephone numbers through directory assistance. Special needs staff will also advise hearing or speech- impaired customers using a TDD/TTY unit about special services available to assist them in the placement of operator-assisted telephone calls, and about reduced ex- change and iong distance rates applying to hearing or voice-impaired TDD/TTY d users.
