Politicians’ extradition antics simply criminal COMMON SENSE has long left our body politic and been replaced by common nonsense — as shown, in particular, by the antics of the brothers and sisters of the NDP in Ottawa in the extradition issue. Take the Ng case. Charles Ng is the man wantec in the U.S. on charges of mass murder. But so far we have been unable to send him back to face trial. He has been in this country for nearly five years, at enough cost to the taxpayer to have kept a dozen food banks going. For four of those five years he was able to hide behind one of our nonsense regulations. That's the one that permits suspected and even actual murderers to eat well and watch TV in a Canadian jail if they face the death penalty in their own country. Joe Clark and other nonsense pediars were responsible for that one, under which even a foreign Clifford Olson could stay here. In the Ng case, though, there was so much public rage that the justice minister of the day finally — signed an extradition warrant without asking for an assurance that Ng’s neck would be safe if he were found guilty. Progress. Of a sort. But he’s still our guest because compas- sion-crazed Solomons in parlia- ment have made it impossible for quick justice to be done. They have created a Gordian knot of laws, including the Charter of Wrongs, that helps the Ngs more than it hinders them. « Doug Collins ON THE OTHER HAND So phoney refugees get to Stay, deportation orders are ignored, criminals arrive, knowing they will be here indefinitely. If they commit a crime in Canada they laugh even more. That guarantees a prison sentence that must be served before they can be considered for extradition. Which is what Ne did. One MP who has been trying to inject some logic into this goofiness is Tory MP Bill Domm. Without success, thanks to the NDP, which has filibustered Domm’s private member’s bill — a bill that, if passed, would make a few modest short-cuts in the process. And in the NDP, B.C.’s Svend Robinson and lan Waddell have been the most obstructive. lt was talked out again the other day, just as it was in Oc- tober. On both occasions there was enough doubletalk to satisfy a Tartulfe, Ng's fawyer has used seven log- ical steps. They remind one of the Seven Ages of Man, and could A take almost as long. There were four steps in the first round, ending with the Supreme Court cf Canada. Then, because the minister signed that extradition order. another three were opened through the Federal Court, which deals with com- plaints against the Crown. That means it ends once again with the Supreme Court. Having Ng as our guest has probably cost us a million bucks, what with free board and lodging, court costs, lawyer’s fees, and special protection so that other cons can’t do him in. Last year, relatives of the dozen dead whose murders Ng is accused of committing came to Ottawa to plead their case. A mother described how he allegedly made videos of her daughter. These showed the girl handcuffed, bound in chains, and begging for her baby to be spared. Mother and baby have not been seen since. {n Calgary, Ng got four and a half years after putting a bullet into a department store security guard. If common sense had ruled he would have been sent back to the U.S. pronto — with the condition that he be returned to face trial in Canada if acquitted in the U.S. The Ng case is not a lone in- stance. We also have a proved murderer in this country. His name is Joseph Kindier and he has been here for six years. a Presenting the “University Singers” Friday, December 21 Tt Wednesday, December 19, 1990 - North Shore News - 9 BEAT THE HEAD TAX (Before Jan.
