A THIEF who struck at
Capilano Golf and Country
Club over the weckend may
intend starting his own golf
club, judging from the items
stolen.

Overnight between
Saturday evening and
Sunday morning, someone
made their way to the tce
area of number five and
number six holes and helped
themself to two golfball
washer units, worth about
$100, a seven foot wooden
bench on a metal frame,

bearing the club crest, worth

message North . Van-

couver City council
gave itself last week
and on Monday council
members showed they
were determined to
practise what they
preach.

In separate actions,
council voted to cancel a
popular show so it could
save $600, returned a bylaw
to staff because it exceeded
the federal government's ‘six
and five’ restraint guidelines,
and lectured the provincial
finance minister on the need
for fiscal responsibility.

Council decided against a
fireworks display this
Halloween, because of the
cost, estimated at $600.
Alderman Frank Marcino

said the City had already had
a good fireworks display on
May 2 to celebrate North
Van’s 75th birthday.

Council voted to scrap its
proposed electrical  in-
spection fee revisions after a
sharp-eyed Alderman Stella
Jo Dean noticed that the
revisions would increase the
fees by eight per cent — two
per cent higher than the
federal wage and _ price
guidelines. .

Council had been on the
verge of routinely giving the
bylaw its second reading
when Dean made her an-
nouncement, noting that
council had recently met
with federal cabinet minister
Senator Ray Perrault and
agreed to the ‘six and five
solution’.

budget freeze, because of
what Alderman’ Frank
Marcino sarcastically called
“Victoria’s act of restraint”
that day in adding seven
more seats to the legislature.
