First let me take care of a few details.” Just imagine there’s no time for any last minute details. So, pull up a cloud and sit down. It’s time to talk about gettng your affairs in or- der.... Partly because none of us likes to think about death, particularly our own, and partly because we're so caught up with the problems of simply living from day-to- day, we tend to put off preparing for something that happens to all of us. But while the subject shouldn't preoccupy us, there are some practical things we can do to make our deaths easier for those we leave behind. Jill Stocker is director of Educational elations for the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association and she spoke to me recently about this very topic of planning for death. She said a plan should be made while people are still living; that the first thing a husband and wife should do is sit down and discuss the various financial tran- sactions they are committed to, like insurance policies, banking and_ other in- vestments, so that each knows all the family business activilies. Personal documents hke birth and marrage cer- tificates, divorce papers, real estate contracts and wills, should all be listed and stored in a safe and ac- cessible place known to all so that, if something hap jo COUPON FO ! She also suggested that some record of this family discussion be kept so that each member known exactly what exists in the family’s financial portfolio. When asked if a will would cover ali that, Stocker said that an incredible 70 per cent of all Canadian men die without leaving one! That can make things difficult for their families because they won't know how the estate is to be disposed of. It could also lead to some bitter wrangling among family members. Not only is it important to know what is in the estate; people need to know where everything is. For example, if there is a safety deposit box con- taining important documents or valuable property, where is 1t? Where is the safety deposit box key? If there are bank accounts or other investments, where can they be located and what are their numbers? Plans will have to be made for their financial protection and education and a decision will have to be made about who will care for them. No Matter what you decide, your plan should _ be discussed fully with whomever you choose to take the responsibility and it should be written down in some document. But Stocker offers some practical assistance in the form of a booklet she helped put together called, “Where is Everything?” It’s a fill-in- the-blanks booklet in which you can record all the necessary details. The booklet, which is available free of charge from The Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association, was designed to help people organize their personal and financial documents and to help them to get their affairs in order.
