Lady Luck plays an im-
portant role in getting you
through Customs without a
long delay. Fridays and
Sundays are the busiest days
and you are taking a chance
when you come through at

peak times. Avoid this

timing if at all possible.
Anyone who brings in

agriculture products and

certain<foods is asking for
trouble.. Since Canada has
enough parasites of its own,
foreign ones aren't welcome.

You're guaranteed an
interview with an inspector if
you mention to the primary
official that you're carrying
anything of the sort. If you
try to smuggle, you may be
facing an interview of an
entirely different kind!
Leave the seeds and flowers
where they belong! If you
have purchased things like
pineapples, coconuts or leiis
from a registered duty-free
shop,~present -the bill to the
primary officer and hope for
the best.

Yes! There is a difference,

in officials... Those of you
who duck when you see a
woman at the desk or a
young man have the right
idea! Experienced customs
officials admit that the
young. employees are more
apt to relish the entire letter
of the law where an older,
seasoned employee will be
more flexible. Since the
hiring of women officers is a
fairly new thing, you aren't
apt to find too many
seasoned women officers.

Re-entering Canada isn’t a
good time to get nasty.
Customs officers are only
human and when you're the
199th passenger they've
coped with in one day, their
butt is just as sore as
yours.They are sick of
whining travellers and don't
give a damn if you've got
twelve relatives waiting to
welcome you home. I don't
blame them.

Declare your purchases —
including those you know to
be duty-free. Present your
forms filled-out and keep
your réceipts. I know that if
I were standing behind one
of those desks, after seven
hours, and some wretch told
me that “it was none of my
business,” ['d make it my
business to see that he spent
two hours meditating 1n the
“baggage search” line. After
all, we're only human.

Canada Customs needs a
total re-vamping! There is no
excuse for six officials on the
search line when there is
space for 14. They excuse
this on the grounds that
airline schedules are crratic
and delays occur Balder-

number of retired officials,
they could find a few who
would like part-time work to
subsidize a pension.

It’s about time — that
Canada Customs worked out
a reciprocal agreement with
their counterparts in places
like Hawaii, London, Seattie
and Amsterdam. [t doesn’t
take a genius to figure out
that a plane leaving Holland
three hours late is going to
cause a delay in Vancouver.
If the customs officials in all

countries could relay
messages back and forth,
extra staff from the part-time
roll could be called in to
handle the crunch.

In England, there are two
routes that you may take

-when entering the country:

the “red” is for those who
have declarations to make:
the “green” is for overseas
visitors who aren't making a
declaration or who are in
transit. Naturally both are
policed by trained officers
who spot check. What this
does is free the unen-
cumbered traveller to get the
hell out of the area with the
minimum of fuss.

In many countries — two
that [ve seen (Australia and
Italy) — dogs are used to
sniff for drugs and firearms.
It acts as a great deterrent
for bringing forbidden
substances into the country.

Canada uses them too —
but behind the scenes. I'll
bet you didn't know that one

“Super-sniffing Bowser” may .
have trucked his way over

your bags before they ever
came down the carousel! If 1
were running the airport
customs facility, 'd have a
crew of dogs and handlers —
highly visible — to deter
anyone from considering a
pound of hashish.

GAVE BLOOD

On an odd note — I had
no idea that hashish was
such a flexible item. It is
harvested by- men in plastic
slickers wading through
fields of marijuana when the
plants produce oil. The oil
clings to the slickers and is
scraped off. From there it
can be solidified and made
into all sorts of phony ob-
jects.

One man_ had
“wooden” buttons
coat. Pure hash! Another
shipped a _ selection of
records to Canada. If the
customs officer hadn't been
a music lover, he'd not have
discovered that the
“records” were unplayable.
Hashish, pressed and
packaged! A dog wouldn't
have missed that!

If you are trying to cheat
Canada Customs — and I
hope you fail - here a few
tips I picked up that Friday:

Don't hide plants in your
bra.

If you buy jewellery or
watches and plan to smuggle
them in, don't put the
receipts and guarantees
behind your driver's licence
in your wallet. You can
scream that you bought that
Seiko watch at Eatons but
that receipt from Hong Kong
will do you in!
