42 -North Shore News -— Wednesday, September 27, 2000 : She | Quakefair organizers score success APPROXIMATELY 2,500 children and their parents came to learn about getting reauy for a major earthquake at B.C.’s biggest-ever neigh- bourhood preparedness show. Quakefair was held Sept. 16 in North Vancouver. Children watched Tanya Reid and company’s production of Disaster Alley. Along with the duchess of doom (whose partne: was trapped under a bookcase while she argued with him about calling the avighbours for help), the duke of disaster and a car- nival barker got the message across — it is our neighbours wh will be our first best source of help when disaster strikes, so we'd du well to know who has first-aid training on the block and who has fire suppression experience before the big one hits. “That’s what neighbourhood team programs are all about. It’s the most effective way to prepare. The 1994 Northridge ; ‘ (California) earthquake showed just how valuable neighbou! GC i e a ni swe e hood programs are. We were thrilled to partner with the City of p North Vancouver to launch the first ever Quakefair” said Mary . Clappa, chair of the Neighbourhood Emergency Socie GRADE 4 and 5 students from West Vancouver's Hollyburn elementary schco! walked down to Ambleside (NES). Beach last week fer the Great Seach Clean-Up. They recorded their findings for the Vancouver Aquarium. The NES was set up not long ago to spur governments and ; industry to help people learn earthquake preparedness. Forty . : organizations worked with the NES to help build and execute Quakefair. Government pians to handle a major quake in the Lower Mainland expect citizens to do rescues, put out fires, care for each other and survive on their own for a Jeast 72 hours. Although there are a small cadre of volunteers in every com- munity who are ready, 95% of the population is not. But North Vancouver now has at least 2,500 people who know the basics of neighbourhood preparedness. Quakefair was the brainchild of Clappa, who has been lead- ing the charge in B.C. on neighbourhood preparedness and emergency social services since 1986. ; “We (the emergency planning community) have been trying all sorts of things to engage the public in preparedness. But it was the Auditor General's report (1998) that really showed just how little is being done at the neighbourhood level. - Neazly all our work has focused on organizing the official response — : } now is the time to shift gears and focus on the people side o NANCIE iiriatil i disaster readiness” said Clappa. “We plan to take Quakefair to erne ! uy Gi : communities across B.C.
