18 — Wednesday, March 11, 1998 — North Shore News Charity work contributes to communi IF you read our North Shore MP Ted White’s articles in the News on the status of “charita- ble” organizations soliciting public funds, you may have been left wondering what chari- ties can you trust. During the years that I was CEO of the Kinsmen Rehabilitation Foundation, 1 encountered a few question- able non-profits. Doubtless they exist. On the basis of my per- sonal experience you may rest assured most charities still deliver the goods to the needy. On Feb. 15, my wife and I had the opportunity to have-an up-close and person- al visit of Variety Club’s 32nd annual Show of Hearts Telethon. Since 1965 BCTV and Variety have been partners in B.C.’s most popular charity event. : Any legitimate charity would be proud of the work done by these folks, many of | whom are involved in “Show Busintss.” ~The logistics of this mon- umental 22-hour non-stop event are overwhelming. - Tt was like touring the ' Star Ship Enterprise, watch- ing countless volunteers at wark, What impressed me was the huge role that residents of the North Shore played in this year’s astounding suc- cess. More than $4 million was pledged to be disbursed by the Variety Club of B.C. to meet the needs of chil- dren living with disabilities. All the moncy raised stays in B.C. and provides services and equipment our children would otherwise nor get. To raise this kind of money an army is needed. Variety had over 4,000 vot- unteers take part to make the television show an artis- tic and philanthropic success. Internationa} stars like Ray Charles shared billing with artists who live in our community such as Dec Daniels, Diane Deviller, Tania Hancheroff, Jim Hibbard, Marcus Mosely, and Bobbi Smith just to mention those I recognized. Other performing groups included the Air Cadets, Blue Bach Trio, and Martial Arts Champions of the North Shore. Organizers of the event represented an amazingly large number of well-known North Shore denizens. These included Art Jones the popular cable television host, who was in charge of VIP and media relations. Immediate past chairman of the event was Barry Law, while the supreme comman- der of the hundreds of assembled volunteers and this year’s chairman was Shirley Stocker. T still don’t know how CKNW functions without her. The always beautiful (inside and our) Ann Mortifee contributed her tal- ents as did world renowned painter Daniel Izzard. West Vancouverite, Izzard - not only contributed all the proceeds from one of his prints On she wings of hope. but also donated $10,000 in cash to buy “Hart Walkers” for disabled youngsters Wandering around. back- stage at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre was like old North Shore home weck. Dave Arthur, Velma Brown, Bob Mullin, Paul Lifton, Doug Rogers, and Linda Wright made surc nothing could go wrong. ‘Tne Variety Club have more than 70 offices Career criminal turned loose A man wanted by Vancouver City property crimes to support his scrious drug ~ Police on a Canada-wide-warrant for break and enter was arrested on Feb. 24 allegedly breaking into laundry ~ machines in a Central Lonsdale - . apartment. “North ‘Vancouver RCMP Const. Its major projects have included Canuck Mace founded by the Griffiths family of the North Shore and The Children’s founda- son founded by the Lisoyar iamily who also live in West Vancouver. While the Variety Club's telethon carried by BCTV is the best known fund raiser, they organize and stage over 1,000 events in every corner of our province to assist chil- dren with special needs liv- ing in British Columbia. Living at a time when we seem to distrust everything and everyone it is imporrant not to lose sight of reality. The reality is that we live in a special community in the best province of the greatest country on earth. When we come together and donate time, talent or money to those whose needs are greatest, we are ensuring that the values we cherish will not perish. This humble scribe salutes all who helped make the lives of children over- coming disabilities easier to live. Ye need ta encourage charity not condemn it. — Andy Danvlin isa for- mer West Vancouver council- lor.
