Port arguments ‘short-sighted’ Dear Editor: It snowed carly on the North Shore. The federal Crown corporation, the Port of Vancouver Corp., did a ‘‘snow job’ on the North Van- couver City Council. Capt. Norman Stark of the Port told council that it ‘would be foolish to ignore the wishes of our customers,’’ and 1 wonder if it is the wish of any tourist to be’ placed in an area that is not very safe. ’ # draft policy statement from the Vancouver planning depart- ment states, ‘Vancouver Police Department statistics suggest that more assaults occur, propor- tionally, in the central business district and the downtown eastside (of Vancouver) than anywhere else in the city.”” Also, the study referred to by the Port (ie. Gary Dukes and associates), which was funded by the Port, says clearly that the land mass, road system, and deep water for a double-berthed cruiseship facility with convention centre does, indeed, exist on the North Shore site. Certainly, the infrastructure of hotels and retail stores would quickly spring up if the Port put the facility cruiseship pier/ convention centre in. And the purchase of a fast ferry would speedily bring tourists from the North Shore to various points in Vancouver when required. No, the arguments by the Port Logging blockades: don’t bite hand that feeds you Dear Editor: : : More. than people realize, blockades on West Coast logging roads have an impact on us all, It is staggering to think of those who will be affected: newspaper offices, . publishing companies, computer users, schools, univer- sities, hospitals, banks, shops, * government offices, builders and many more. .--It: starts a chain reaction that would hurt everyone. —. , Keep reporting ‘this negativism -and- you might well see’ our pulp -mills,. sawmills, and other wood- using ’ facteries , close’ down for i ‘Think about it — no wood, no- -- lumber, no paper. and no taxes or -: jobs,.and no money for the social services and ‘the other important - aspecis of our daily life which we enjoy in this wonderful province. “< How many times a day do you have a piece: of paper in your -hand?! Or how many depend on wood for shelter? These blockades hurt us all and we should be very worried for the impact they are having on all hard-working Canadians. { would suggest to those who blockade, take a tree in your left hand and a shovel in your right and plant a tree for everyone’s future. After it is planted, pray that our mills.do not shut down so that when a job is needed there is one. Do not forget, trees do grow; they are a renewable resource. Like any crop, they need tending, which also makes jobs. New forests also give us cleaner air than do old ones. Like young bodies compared to old ones, _ youth has more energy. Old trees one day will die and fall. down. Ht is part of life faced ‘by all of us. To the press, don’t bite the hand that feeds you. Stop giving ' these blockaders media ‘‘hype.”” Let’s hear instead about the solutions aceded. Celia M. Devitt West Vancouver are strictly political and short- sighted, We need a smaller, scaied-down convention centre hooked up by fibre optics, so that a convention could be held simultaneously in two separate buildings. The technology already exists for that, and a waterfront. park would not have to be destroyed for local, low-income family safe use. The fact is, the Port has not done a detailed, proper study of the North Shore site for tourist facilities, and is proceeding in an undemocratic fashion. This is contrary to the Municipal Act which stipulates that proceeds from that source may only be used for capital projects such as new roads, sidewalks, libraries, recreation facilities, erc. No other municipality anywhere in B.C. pursues such a policy. So why are we doing it? Because it makes Council look good. But it is also at the expense of the next generation of taxpayers as well. If there are still no playing fields in the Inter-River area, if the Parkgate facility was postponed, if the leaky, shoddy and run down works yard was not rebuilt, if there was no money for sidewalks in the 1993 bud- get, even though land sales reached 23 million dollars, and if facilities such as an ice rink are nothing buc a dream, it is because of this. I moved that we eliminate this’ practice. But the lure to look good in time for the 1993 municipal election was too great and the decision made in 1992 for a 3 year phase out was rescinded, even though the first phase had already been implemented. . ; I tied again. | moved chat we transfer a portion of the annual Jand sale money and add it co the District Heritage Fund so that when there is no more land to sell, the fund would be large enough to cover all cap- ital requirements in perpetuity. Fucure councils would never have to raise taxes for capital projects. It’s the smart way of doing it. It’s what you would do if you were running a business, or care what you leave behind for your children. Council rejected my proposal. Councillor Paul Turner was particularly adamant. Bur unless the current poli-y is changed and changed soon, in ten to twelve years’ time, when the land is’ gone, District residents will not only be hit with the full cost for all operating expenses, noc only will needed sports, playing fields, recreational, youth, arts and facilities for seniors not be in place, but the interest generated from the Heritage Fund will not be enough to bankroll such facilities either. The tax- payers will cither face big tax hikes to pay for them or suffer drastic cuts in livability or services. None of this is necessary. There will be a municipal election soon.
