2 - Sunday, October 25, 1992 - North Shore News North Van City Fire Boat Now in Operation! It’s ships ahoy for the Port of Vancouver Fire Departments! On October 6, 1992 the City of North Vancouver took control of one of the five fireboats that are now being operated in the Port of Vancouver. In 1989 a survey con- ducted by the Vancouver Port Corporation in conjunction with the five districts of Vancouver estabiished the need for waterside fire fighting equip- ment. “This is one of the busiest ports in the country and it has become essential for our Fire Department to have the necessary equipment to handle the needs of our marine community” says chief Tom Cumming of the North Vancouver City Fire Department. The Port of Vancouver has not had fire protection from the water side since 1989 when the City of Vancouver retired it’s only fire boat. The five new fireboats were constructed by a local Vancouver shipyard, - Celtic Shipyards Ltd. Powered by jet propulsion, these boats are designed for fast response and high performance. They can pump out 3,000 gallons of water per minute, travel up to thirty knots, and can respond to an alarm within fifteen minutes. “We are tremendously pleased and excited to see this project come to fruition. The equipment and training will make a great difference in our ability to respond to marine emergencies. We now have the most efficient and effective system anywhere in Canada.” Chief Tom Cumming The North Vancouver boat will be kept at the foot of Chesterfield Av- enue in a specially designed boat house which will protect the boat as well as keep it “warm” for fast response. The other four boats are strategically placed in Vancouver, North Vancouver District, Burnaby, and Port Moody to ensure full coverage of the waterfront. Training is currently being conducted on how to operate the boats. While the North Vancouver fire fighters are familiar with marine fire fight- ing, they are learning about safety and the mechanics of the boat during fire fighting, the effects of the tides, and how to cope with the constant move- ment caused by the pressure from the water monitors. The public is invited to come down to see the boats and watch the fire fighters train at Waterfront Park. As Chief Cumming relates, “We are de- lighted to have the opportunity to show the residents of Nerth Vancouver the high ie level of fequipment and expertise we now have at our facility: “ RETIRES for Your Views on Lonsdale Your response to our September 13th survey on Lower and Central Lonsdale was excellent.
