News photographer Cindy Goodman recently spent time on the third-floor maternity ward capturing a variety of activities associated with the arrival of the newest and smallest North Shore residents. From top left, counterclockwise, Vancouver resident Anne Testini is hooked up to a fetal monitoring machine for a non-stress test of her baby. The machine contains a computer that checks the baby’s heartbeat and makes sure the baby’s placenta is functioning properly. One-hour-old Miranda Barrie Nimchuck is not too thrilled about having a stethoscope placed on her chest during a checkup by Dr. Joanne Larson. Pleased to see double is Nichole Karmali whose twin boys Aly Khan and Janmohamed were delivered by caesarean section. The boys weighed 5 lbs. each at birth and were cared for in the special-care nursery. Sue Dawson is comforted by her husband, Jeff, during a quiet break while she is in labor. Bottom left next page. Three infants adjust to their new surroundings. New mom Shirley Goldyn has no trouble picking out her son, Mathew, in a row of babies. Registered Nurses (left to right) Judy Garth, Barbara Brais and Lila Stephens with three of their charges. Each year, 1,800 babies are born at LGH. A new mother stays at the hospital an average of three days; those who have delivered by caesarean section stay five days.
