Program helps seniors Keep Well On Wednesday’s Lifestyles front page, Bob Gillingham wrote a first-person account of his expe- rience with the Nosth Shore Keep Well program. Below are some of the details of the progam's background ‘AS WITH any stage of life, growing older brings beth joys and hardships. By Peggy Trende!l-Whittaker News Reporter On the North Shore, adults over 50 have a_ thrice-weekly resource that can help them in- crease the former and minimize the latter: North Shore Keep Well, a largely volunteer-run program that. was started with a federal New Horizons grant in 1986. Siace that time, there have been over 16,000 drop-in visits to the free Keep Well programs that run weekly out of Silver Harbour Centre, North Shore Neighbour- hood House and the West Van- couver Seniors’ Activity Centre. With slight variations between each venue, the Keep Well morn- ings are generally spent engaging in mild exercise, socializing over an inexpensive hot lunch, asking questions of health professionals, checking one’s blood pressure and enjoying a massage or reflexology and listening to monthly guest speakers. Coordinator Elise Shepherd says the focus of the program is preventive health. "We have to have people who are motivated to set gcoals for themselves,’’ she says. ‘‘It’s time that all of us learn to take respon- sibility for ourselves.”’ Some older adults can be especially vulnerable to declining health as a result of the emotional impact that comes frem finding themselves widowed, retired after Channel is free NORTH SHORE TV bkujfs can tune into Superchannel absolutely free this weekend on Shaw Cable. Attending the Keep Well pro- grams, of volunteering their skills to help keep the program running, are both means by which older adults maintain or improve their well-being. But while Shepherd says the program is continually attracting new participants, it is on a shaky financial footiag. Currently, its $25,000 annual budget, which covers such necessities as office supplies and a part-time coordinators’ salary, is being supported by interim fund- ing from the federal New Horizons program. When those funds are ex- hausted, Keep Well will be in dire straits. But Shepherd has petition- ed the three local municipalities to pick up the financial slack by con- tributing $4,500 each. “Our program served approxi- mately 4,200 people last year, and we project an increase of 2bout 20 per cen: this year,’ Shepherd says, noting that more than 100 volunteers and 16 volunteer board members together donated ap- proximately 4,000 hours during that time. The Keep Well program runs Monday mornings at North Shore Neighbeurhood House, 225 E. 2nd St., Nosth Van (987-8138), Wednesday mornings at Silver Harbour Centre, 144 E. 22nd St., | North Van (980-2474) and Thurs- day mornings at the West Van- couver Seniors Activity Centre, 695-21st St., West Van (926-4375).
