Locals join the Fringe EXCITEMENT [S mounting as the Fifth Annual Vancouver Fringe Festival gets ready for a 10-day celebration of alternative theatre and performance art. By EVELYN JACOB News Reporter This vear’s festival includes plenty of local talent. Local actor/playwright Brad Gough's comedy spoof, The World of Beauty, is rnaking its debut at the Fringe. The play, a combined effort of Gough and Denise Lane, is a 90- minute take-off of the T.V. shows Oprah, The Morton Downey Jr. Show and The New You Show. Audience members will become part of a live studio audience. Hosts Gough and Lane interview fashion designers, devil worship- pers and “‘women fighting fat.” Featured in the cast is Joe Keithley, otherwise known as Joey Shithead, the lead singer of Van- couver’s D.O.A. Another focally-produced show is the Adelphi Screamers’ Lady Audley’s Secret, a Victorian melo- drama of murder, betrayal and madness recreated by a company that includes Antony Holland, Catherine Caines and Tracey Holmes. The play is directed and designed by Jessie Richardson nominees Martin Millerchip and Mara Gottler. A ‘‘serious comedy" by Catherine Hayes called Skirmishes features local actors Bil! Murdoch, Dawn Moore, Judi Price and Eleanor Ratzlaff of Capilano Col- lege’s Theatre department. Skir- mishes is a caustic and bitingly funny presentation of the relation- ship tetween two sisters facing the death of their invalid mother. Still another local work, Still Life and the Filter Queen by Maureen Robinson, is presented by the Argyle Players. The play is a fast-paced titillating comedy in- volving a vacuum cleaner sales- woman and her would-be male customer who holds her at gun- point, Local actor John McLaren is featured in It’s a Scream Produc- tions’ There's Just One Hitch, seen Saturdays at the Arts Club Cabaret. Life After Talking, presented by Blue Fish Theatre Company, is a romantic comedy and/or personal tragedy about the importance of communication and the meaning of art. See it and decide for yourself.
