Complementing this are flowers
which resemble king-size gladioli in
exotic-and brilliant shades. Rang-
ing in height from .50 (1% ft.)
metres for dwarf varieties, to
about 1.25 metres (4 ft.), Canna i is
often found in the
border and looks particularly fine
against an evergreen backgzound.

Gladioli are well represented to-
day in many Canadian gardens,
but what about the fragrant cous-
in, Gladiolus callianthus? Known
as Acidanthera bicolor and com-
monly called the Abyssinian
gladiolus, this plant has sweet-

ing, creamy white flowers
with a dark lilac heart.

Plant the corms at a depth of 5

to 7 cm (2 to 3 in.) late in spring,
when all threat of frost has passed.
Because they are similar in culture,
Acidanthera may be inter-planted
with other gladioli for an appeal-
ing effect.
The summer or giant hyacinth,
Galtonia candicans, and Eucomis
bicolor, the pineapple lily, both
have a mild perfume and add
strong visual interest to the sum-
mer garden. The former stands a
metre or more in height, and, with
its white-pendant-shaped flowers,
makes a handsome addition to the
border

about 10 cm (4 in.) deep, 20 cm (8
in.) apart — these large bulbs will

smail leaves (bracts) at the top of a
flower spike, which may reach half
