(Elisworth Dickson photo) Too hot for backyard burners Two instances of backyard fires which got out of control last weekend clearly show that even in West Van- couver, whére outside burning is legal up to May 15, there are rules that need to be obeyed. Of the three North Shore municipalities, only West Vancouver allows open burning other than on specified weekends of the year. But the fire department warns that people are failing to carry out the requirement of notifying the fire department before lighting up and in some cases their fires get out of control. The situation can become particularly hazardous after sunny weather when garden refuse which is to be burned has had a chance to dry out. Such was the case last weekend, when the fire department was twice called to backyard fires they had not previously been told about. The fire spread from the burning barrel to the pile of leaves nearby and reached the edge of the garage just as the fire department arrived. Firemen were also called to the 1200 block Jefferson Sunday when another garden fire got out of control.
