2 - Wednesday, November 25, 1987 - North Shore News ROBERT SMITH SELECTED FOLLOWING AN intensive three-month search, the selec- tion committee for the Lions Gate Hospital Board has chosen a new president and chief executive officer for the 700-bed hospital. Robert Smith, the current depu- ty director of the Cancer Control Agency of B.C., will officially take over April ] the position vacated by John Borthwick, who retired at the end of September after serving as LGH’s president for the previous !! years. But he (Smith) was the most outstan- ding of an outstanding group.” The initial field of 55 was pared down to a short list of 15, then to seven final applicants who were all interviewed by the committee, which was made up of three LGH board members, two hospital staff and one doctor. The high quality of the appli- cants was especially gratifying for the selection committee, Clark said, because it ‘‘shows the high regard with which Lions Gate Hospital is held all across Canada. It is seen as an innovative, warm and humane hospital that is in- credibly well run. Many of the candidates said they applied for the position because of the hospi- tal’s reputation, and that is really pleasing to me.” Clark described Smith as a “very humane, caring .person”’ who is ‘‘organized, motivated, in- novative... and believes that pa- tient care comes first.” Married with three daughters, Smith, 43, is a certified member of BEFORE YOU DESTROY IT... y— Having problems? Among the major concerns fac- ing the hospital and B.C. health care in generai, Smith said, is the future of provincial government funding and how it will be affected by the government’s perception that too much of its budget is be- ing consumed by health care costs. Smith, who has worked with Borthwick on various committees, said he holds his predecessor in high regard, ‘‘so it’s an honor to follow him.
