Doctor provides tips on squash dos SQUASH HAS grown by leaps and bounds in Canada and has replaced jogging in popularity among men and women of all ages. But, like jogging, it has its pitfalls, particularly with regard to foot care. Dr. Lloyd Nesbitt, a Toronto podiatrist, and presi- dent of the Canadian Podiatric Sports Medicine Academy, has some dos and don’ts for squash players. Among the dos: ®* spend some time doing stretching exercises before your game. * use proper squash shoes to prevent injuries. They should have adequate cushioning at the ball of the foot and should be designed for squash. ® powder your feet and your shoes. This will absorb moisture, reduce friction and lessen the chance of fungus infection. Convenient cool and drying foot and don’ts sprays are available. © guard against feet friction, which lead to blisters. © after sports activity check your feet for red spots, which signal a developing blister and should be covered with moleskin to prevent further irritation. ® blisters should be covered with vaseline and gauze. © consider cushioned insoles. The twisting and turning motions on the balls of the feet can create a lot of shearing forces, inflammation, blistering or callouses. Special density foam insoles are available that will reduce friction and absorb shock and pressure to give you more comfort and protection for your feet. Dr. Nesbitt’s don’ts include: e don’t try to play through pain. Increase the number of games gradually. e don’t take analgesic pills to mask pain. © don’t attempt a 100 per cent workout ... after a full meal; if you're just back from a layoff or injury.
