FORMER Capilano College prin-
cipal Paul Gallagher was named
recently to the Order of Canada.

“Tm honored, pleased and flat-
tered,”” Gallagher said. '*The pro-
cess involves them asking if it (the
award) were offered to you would
you accept it and the answer to
that was ves. Why would anyone
say no?"

Gallagher, a North Vancouver
resident, was one of 70 Canadians
appointed to the Order, and will be
gomg to Ottawa in November for
the ceremonial investiture at
Rideau Hall,

He received the honor for his
work in helping to improve Cana-
dian education.

After an eight-year career at
Capilano College, the prominent
B.C. educator accepted the posi-
tion as president of Vancouver
Community College in May, 1985,

He was also the first president
for Dawson College in Montreal -
the first English language college
in Quebee. He accepted an
honorary degree from Concordia
University in Montreal in 1970,
and since 1959 has been a fellow of
the Canadian College of Teachers.

Gaiiagher, a bilingual native
Montrealer, is a promoter of both
bilingualism and multi-culturalism.

He is the author of six books on
education and Canadian Studies
and is the vice-president of the
Association of Canadian Com-
munity Colleges.

His activities in the community
include being the director of the
Vancouver Board of Trade, a
member of the North Shore ic elbd :
Chamber of Commerce, past ; j A : : 30 os
board member of the United Way. 4 ae . = : -
He is now chairman of the United
Way's task force on services to
members of ethnic communities in
the Lower Mainland.

couver in 1977,
