These maladies are in- fluenced by a build-up of toxins, Clements believes, created by non-utilized amines and sugars in the body. A low amnio oxidase level in a person makes it more difficult to metabolize amine-rich food, Clements says. The toxins in turn at- tack areas in the body, such as the nervous system caus- ing migraines, or hormones causing an imbalance. Foods rich in amines, Clements says, include wine, beer, cheese, soya, sour cream, bananas, avocados and walnuts. Other foods to avoid, she says, are those high in refined sugars. Clements says she noticed immediate improvement after she corrected her diet, eliminating amines and sugars and supplementing with vitamins, to keep her sodium/potassium, calci- um/magnesium, chromium and other vitamin and min- eral levels in balance. “T went on the program, and within three weeks |] was a different woman. But it took about a year before he would trust me again. It took time to heal problems in the relationship.” Because she felt the diet theory her doctor used ap- plied to PMS, although he didn’t deal specifically with the hormonal imbalance, Clements decided to open her own clinic. The clinic is located on Clyde Avenue in West Van- couver, and Clements’ workshops include a slide presentation, information on symptoms, physiology, vitamins, diet and pro- gesterone therapy. Personal analyses are done, and Cle- ments gives sufferers advice on how to cope with symp- toms and shows them how to cook without certain ingre- dients. “Some PMS sufferers go to psychiatrists, take valiums and diuretics or visit a neu- rologist, but that’s not the answer,’' Clements says. '‘l think the fact that we're a pill generation, we’re seeing (PMS) more.”’ Three to four-hour workshops with six clients costs $40 per person. Private counselling is $25 an hour.
