ALL SIGNS point ts te a continuation of Sunday etore opening for some time io come. ANALYSIS 3 undays will stay : WHILE: “SHOPPERS are finding some of the stores that were open Sundays before Christmas now closed and the only certain thing about the Sunday shopping scene appears to be the uncertainty, - -.there is growing’ ‘evidence that Sunday .shopping will be around for some time : to come. By MARK HAMILT! The majority of the major stores that began opening Sundays in early December have left open, most of their outlets across the. Lower - Maintand. While none have made a committment . to long-term opening, it ap- pears that the unwillingness of any of the majors to be the first to close Sundays — risking a loss of business — will keep them open for some time. ; Coupled with that is the fact that - consumers, who quickly grew accustomed to the idea of shopping Sun- days, continue to shop. Crowds are not as large as they during the pre- Christmas buying boom, but they rival those on most other days. The Sunday opening of department stores and shop- ping malls, in particular, has had some spill-over effects on other merchandizers as well. Stores that have been opening for some time, ranging from large home building supply centres to small specialty focd stores, have benefitted from use in- creased awareness of Sunday shopping and the increase in the number of people mak- ing the rounds on that day. In several retail sectors, it is expected that Sunday opening will remain the norm, regardless of what happens with the major department stores. Managers ‘of grocery stores report that staying open Sundays has become a key element in dealing with the competition for food dollars. With the increasing number of fami- lies with both parents work- -ing, a category of Sunday grocery shoppers has arisen. § that takes its business to the closest store that is open. Small owner-operated Stores handling such things as stereos and other personal luxury items are finding, too, that the effort put in on a Sunday is effective in combatting the. larger chain operations that have been drawing’ buyers from the North Shore to other municipalities in the Lower Mainland. And, perhaps surprisingly, few of the operators of stores that have traditionally been open Sundays — primarily smaller corner stores and speciality shops — report significant losses in customers despite the wider acceptance of Sunday shop- ping. Sunduy shopping on a large scale began in a major way in response to a specific merchandizing opportunity — the Christmas season. It appears as though the mar- ketplace is now in a ‘“‘shak- ing-oul"? period when the concept will be closely exam- ined in light of more normal shopping conditions. Whatever the outcome, it appears likely that a large segment of the retail sector now opening its doors on Sunday will continue to do so. Fitness is 2 national issue.
