C6 - Wednesday, June 1, 1983 - North Shore News QUESTION: Seeing the movie has prompted me to think about Gandhi and his philosophy and methods more seriously than I have for many years. In my younger years he was something of an idol for me. I admired and_ respected him. I suppose you could have called me a disciple of his. But I was a careful, almost secret disciple, because there was always the feeling in me that he was im- practical and not down to earth He was so idealistic that even while he seemed “right” to me, I'm afraid that I must have felt that what he had to say and give would never be taken up by enough people to make much difference in this world of violence and wars. I went along with people who were saying, in one way or another, that we have to keep our feet on the ground: that there is no real lasting power in being starry-eyed idealists; that you have to work within the system to get anything done of real world-changing significance. I came to feel that while Gandhi had something we needed, (theoretically he was right on; and his prin- ciples were “right;” and his methods were true to his principles) yet he was Gan- dhi and I was just an or- dinary guy who saw no way of contributing to the prac- tical solution to world pro- Roper Peace is possible blems. Well, since having my at- tention drawn back to Gan- dhi (by the movie) I'm begin- ning to see that perhaps by choosing to be a good middle-of-the-roader and “fitting in” to the acceptable pattern of power struggles and violence and war, I was being almost as impractical as I could get. Mind you, I opposed that pattern in my heart and spirit, but with my mind and muscles I went right along. I think that is not a good enough way for transforming the world in time to keep it from being sizzled into ashes. There’s GOT to be a bet- ter way. Have I been too vague, or would you care to comment? STEWART: I would guess that there are literally milhions of people who, like you, have been (in their hearts) devoted to a princi- ple of life and chosen a man- ner of living that does not fit it. Instead, we have been “practical.” We have fit into power politics, violence, war and all manner of dis-ease. With part of our selves we have recognized the power of love and trust and com- passion, but with another part of our selves, we have chosen force, intrigue and © manipulation, what the cost. no matter We have created our reali- ~ ty. Just around the corner of history there are enough of us who are at Jong last, about ready to accept the “prac- tical” fact that the trans- formed world we want will not come about by force, or legislation, but by masses of us BEING the change we want to see happen. That way will take too long you say? Well, it won't take nearly as long as the short-cuts have taken that we have commit- ted ourselves to for ages. It's a whole new situation and needs a whole new solution. No one will do it for us. Now is the time to BE the change we want to see happen.
