Curious to discover what “Volunteer Week” is all about and who is behind it, I approached Margaret Ramsay, Executive Director of the North Shore Volunteer Action Centre. A trained social worker and an active volunteer, Margaret has been with the Centre since it opened in 1976. Question. Apnil 18-24 has been declared Volunteer Week in Canada. Whats the purpose of this week and how ts it being observed on the North Shore? Margaret: Volunteer Week is celebrated across Canada and the United States. Our primary purpose 1s to recognize the valuable work FASHION « FOOD TRAVEL done by volunteers in various community Services. It's a special time of year when we thank volunteers for their hard work. Here on the North Shore we have plans for several interesting events including a special wine and cheese-— proclamation party on Monday, April 18 which will honour North Shore volunteers. All three mayors will be there to sign the proclamation. We hope that it will be a fun time. A number of volunteer organizations are having their own individual celebrations and others will be sending letters of thanks to their volunteers. And of course, we again have our banner hanging on the Park Royal pedestrian overpass. Q: lt seems that we are hearing more and more about volunteerism recently.
