A7 - Sunday, August 29, 1982 - North Shore News BS mailbox owell bows out Alderman OPEN LETTER TO N. VAN DISTRICT VOTORS Anybody who. serves the public in an elected capacity must assess themselves periodically against their own self-imposed standards. Hopefully these be more severe than the yardstick by which the voters judge them, and with luck the individual will benefit from the examination. Few people Mayor Bell kept ‘a livable balance’ Dear Editor: It is with some regret that I read of Mayor Don Bell's decision to step out of politics and more especially as Mayor of the District of North Vancouver. While one- cannot argue with his reasons for-doing so, namely to have a closer relationship with his family, one has to express regret at his decision. He was one of those exceptional people in public office who was always ready to take a second look. He was what I would call a middle of the road mayor who kept a livable balance on a council of many divergent political views. One would be hard put to visualize anyone on the present council, with the possible exception of Marilyn Baker, as being able to fill his shoes. He knew how to listen to people, he knew how to maintain decorum in the sometimes hostile atmosphere of open council meetings and above all he was a mayor who was always “available”. We shall miss him and await with apprehension his successor. We should all join in wishing both him and his family all those things in life which are so much more valuable than the heady brew of public office. Good luck Mayor Don Bell in your future endeavours. C.F. Vagg North Vancouver Cheers for Kiwanis! Dear Editor: I read an article in your August 15th issue regarding the North Vancouver Kiwanis Foundation and all their donations distributed to such very deserving causes. I wish to convey my appreciation to them, on behalf of my nine year old daughter who attends the Vancouver Neurological Centre. This is a wonderful organization who offer much assistance and support not only to the members themselves, but also to their families. It is groups like the Kiwanis that keep these organizations in existence, especially in these hard times. Three cheers for the North Vancouver Kiwanis and THANK YOU! (Mrs.) G. Nicol North Vancouver Don’t kill pigeons Dear Editor: It is amazing that when some bird or animal happens to inadvertently interfere with our way of life, the first thing we think should be done is kill these unwanted creatures! It never seems to enter the minds of those in charge whether the poisons used are the kind which kill quickly or whether they cause the creatures such suffering before they dic We scem to forget that droppings from any animal, help to nourish our carth! It is a capital sum which, if drawn upon consistently without replenishment will lead to bankruptcy, and all too often in political life, good men and woman are destroyed because they run their accounts too low without realizing it is oc- curring. When I stood for Council in 1974 it was with the promise I would commit at least six years to the position, and eight years have gone by since then. After twenty years of elected office, and five years of appointment to the College Board superimposed thereon, I feel I have earned a rest: I need some time to recharge that capital ac- DIAMONDS and DIAMOND JEWELERY Private Individuals, Trust Companies and Dealers. Perhaps I am also being a bit selfish. I want some time to pursue other interests, to sample life without the constant demands on my private time which public life demands, and to be able to manage my _ affairs without the very real constraints of conflict of interest which accompany elected office. For these reasons I shall not be seeking re-election in November. I do not know how to thank adequately the voters of the District. The con- fidence they have shown in me over the years: is a very special honour, which they give to relatively a few. For my part it has been a satisfying experience, and I can only hope that those I have served to the best of my ability consider they have made as good a bargain as I have. Peter C.D.
