New bureaucracy proposed by commission concerns NV board Association would duplicate work of trustees group NORTH VANCOUVER School District 44 (NVSB) trustees expressed concern at its Sept. 21 meeting that a new Employers’ Association for. the Education sector would be ‘‘an expensive and time-consuming” reproduc- tion of the B.C. School Trustees Association (BCSTA). NORTH VANCOUVER . SCHOOL BOARD ~ by Kevin Gillies The new association was pro- posed in the Korbin Commission’s . Inquiry. ‘into. the Public. Service “and Public Sector. The BCSTA is a_ provincial body that currently represents 65 of B.C.’s 75 school boards. The 10 remaining boards withdrew from the BCSTA, citing various disagreements over deci- sion process and membership cost and have since reorganized under their own banner: the Council of B.C. School Districts (CBCSD). The education minister has since created a working committee ‘‘to develop the terms of reference of the new employers’ association in education (K-12).’’ The working committee is com- posed of six BCSTA representa- tives, two CBCSD representatives, North Vancouver superintendent of schools Dr. Robin Brayne, a school district secretary-treasurer and seven appointees of the pro- vincial government. . The NVSB expressed its concern by adding an amendment to its original motion supporting the BCSTA’s involvement in the for- mation of the employers’ associa- tion. Board chairman Don Bell said there is ‘‘potential for significant bureaucracy being created in. the education field as was done in the health care sector.”’ The board also requested ample time for communication between and the BCSTA. representative for Ernest Alfred Benton, deceased, and John Doe, executor and trustee of the estate of Ernest Benton, dresses unknown.
