The documentary
Genocide, which premiered
Monday at the Ridge
Theatre, is dedicated to the
memory of those who died,
and to informing the public
of how, and why, the Holo-
caust occurred. _

Narrated by Orson Welles
and Elizabeth Taylor, the
film first explores the thriv-
ing Jewish culture in pre-
World War II Europe.

Viewers follow Hitler’s rise
from aspiring young politi-
cian to his slow but sure
assumption of absolute
power.

Hitler seduced the people
with his theories of the Ger-
mans as the Master Race and
convinced them of the
necessity of punfying the
Aryan blood by extermina-
ting all inferior races and
people. His main target was
the Jews, but he also included
Gypsies, blacks, homo-
sexuals, mentally or physical-
ly handicapped people and
anyone who dared to disagree
with him.

At first Hither was dismiss-
ed by senous thinkers as ec-
centnc and slightly insane,
but reactions of the German
people slowly changed from
tolerance to a frenzied hero-
worship

UNEXPECTED Encounter is one of the ballets which

will be presented at the Goh Ballet Academy Perfor-
mances at North Van Centennial Theatre June 9 and 10.
This special students’ workshop project, choreogrpahed
by Che Chan was designed to commemorate Goh Ballet's
fifth aaniversary. Show time will be 8p.m. Saturday,
2p.m. Sunday.

Genocide: The story
still needs te

IT IS HARD to believe that such atrocities could
ever occur, as the Holocaust that claimed six-and-
a-half million lives, and yet it was only 40 years

as ostracism became exter-
mination. Hitler’s hatred
knew no bounds, and as Ger-
man forces invaded
surrounding countnes and
gained power, his Final Solu-
tion was born: concentration
camps for the mass execution
of all who stood in his way.

Inter-woven with historical
facts are excerpts from jour-
nals of those lost in the holo-
caust or memoirs of sur-
vivors, narrated movingly by
Elizabeth Taylor. One can
almost feel the horrors they
must have endured.

Many of those who at-
tempted to escape found no
refuge. Both Canada and the
United States turned away
ships loaded with Jews at-

tempting to escape Hitler’s:

reach, knowing that refusal
to accept them meant their
return to Europe and certain
death.

Genocide was presented by

the Simon Wiesenthal
Center.
Wiesenthal was liberated

from Mauthausen concentra-
tion camp by an American
unit in 1945, and has since
prepared dossiers which have
led to the capture of over
1,100 Nazi war criminals.
Some of the footage in
Genocide has not been
generally available for view-
ing by the public, and it is not
an easy or comfortable film
to watch. Some of the pic-
tures are grisly andthe
accompanying narration
forces one to realize that
what ts being seen was a real-
ty.
The film concludes with a
few chilling statistics docu-
menting a current rise in anti-
semitism and an increasing
popularity of racist groups
such as the Ku Klux Klan and
the American Nazi Party.
