As a mental health advo- cate my job entails assisting people who have some form of mental iliness to obtain benefits, medical issues, hous- ing, CPP benefits and legal problems, itis unfortunate that advo- cacy is such a necessity in this province and while I am able to help most people who approach our agency there is a smiall percentage that I must send away. This percentage consists of the people who urgently need housing: Before becoming an advo- cate | was vaguely aware of «O00 Tax Sale = PURSUANT TO Section 405 (1) of the Local Government Act, the District of North Vancouver is required to publish the - legal description and street address, if any, of properties subject to Tax Sale. J knew about Riverview Hospital closing their doors, [ saw the home- less on the streets and [ volun- teered at the filled shelters. Now [have first-hand know!- edge of the sheer despair and hopelessness that peaple on a low income must endure. Discrimination is only one of the barriers that people must face when phoning a rental suite. And if having a disability is not enough, try finding } housing for the mere amount of $325 per month that the Ministry of Social Development and Economic Security allow for shelter. If one owns 2 cat or a dog (often pets are the only companions socially isolated people have), then the chances of finding any place at all are zero. While government bureau- crats sleep easy in their warm cosy homes every night, there are thousands of people in our province who wonder whether they will have any kind of roof overt their head the next day. It is time the federal and provincial governments were made accountable and use some of our tax dollars to pro- vide adequate housing. Jenny Wright.
