If the surrounding fofty, majestic cedar trees could whisper, and the walls, nooks, and crannies of Cedars Preschool could speak, they would echo the voices of hundreds of happy preschoolers saying: “Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. McKenzie, for your care, concern and guidance through the years.” And, to be sure, many appreciative parents extend to Gerry, Arlene, and the wonderful staff at Cedars Preschool, a sincere thank you for providing 25 years of a much-needed service in the Lynn Vailey area. The couple say they will cherish the mem- orles as they move into a new home with their cats. Gerry and Arlene married in 1955. They accepted teaching positions in Victoria: he in junior high school; she in primary ; school. They built a house in Victoria and taught there for the next 10 years. The McKenzies decided to move to North Vancouver in 1969 where they raised their own family, two adopted children. McKenzie family was very B90 The hearts of Arlene and Gerry were large and caring, and they loved children. So in 1975 on a three-lot piece. - of property, they built their home and the Cedars Preschool. For the first year, Arlene operated the - preschool herself, but the following year Gerry retired from teaching and joined Arlene in running the preschool. They bought a- school bus to take the chil- dren on day trips through- out the Lower Mainland. Through the years Gerry has built a lot of things ‘ around the schooj, both inside and ovt, and almost all of the playground e hip- ment. He has also taught the children to do some easy woodwork projects. The attendance at the preschool has been as high as 100 chil- dren, and presently stands at Always interested in try- ing something new, Gerry built himself an airplane, then sold it and bought into another plane. However, . before he had a chance to fly it, he suffered a heart attack and had a bypass. Gerry says: “That was in - 1980 and it slowed me down a bit, but that was 20 years ago.” The McKenzies agree when they say: “The years operating the preschool have been very rewarding years. *GROU? Arlene are retiring after 25 years of running Cedars Preschool. They are moving, with their two cats, to their newly built home in a quict and scenic setting elsewhere in the Lower Mainland. There, they will settle down and enjoy some gar- dening and we, hobbies. The McKenzies lived their own advice: “Get as good of an education and training as you can and create a healthy and honest lifestyle for yvour- self.” So, Gerry and Arlene, from all of us, we wish you a long, heaithy, and happy retirement.
