Dear Editor: I read with interest your Oct. 13 article regarding the court ruling against the North Vancouver District concerning the mausoleum and’ am left wondering why the council is obsessed with stopping this perfectly legitimate project. How many hundreds of thou- sands of dollars has it squan- dered on this unnecessary legal battle, and will it continue the charade by appealing what was an. overwhelming defeat in court? The reasons for juxdg- ment are pretty damning: from an Hlegally held in-camera meeting to start the rezoning process for the property, to willful obstruction of the applicant. The project mects t the zoning requirements, ‘including. a reduced height restriction imposed after the initial building permit applica- ton i in 1996.. Council was told by its staff at the hearing that develop- ment cost charges would not be applicable to the mau- soleum project, yet recently $1 million was levied for develop- ment cost charges as a condi- tion of the building permit. This levy has been overturned by the courts. A mausoleum appears to be a far more suitable use for this site located alongside the cemetery, which is rapidly run- ning out of space. The instabil- ity of the bank and location under high-voltage power Friday, October 29, 1999 — North Shore News - 9 north shore news MAIL BOX _ lines make this site completely unsuitable for the single-family housing wanted by our elected council, not to mention the increased traffic this would bring on an already very con- gested street. What kind of fiscal respon- sibility is this from our clected municipal government? Ir appears to be NIMBY (net in my back yard) from three councillors who live in the area rather than their supporting something that would be an asset for all district residents. A council that supposedly does not have any moncy to help pay for much-needed school crossing guards should nor be wasting taxpayers moncy on unnecessary Iegal battles. 1 know which candidates | will not be voting for in next month’s municipal election. Tan Wragge North Vancouver WV story questioned ing the activities of the West Vancouver Citizens For Good Government (WVCGG) then spends one half of its length discussing an unrelated topic, one of the mayoral candidates” views on the subject. This is not balanced press and gives a bias toward this candidate. _It is hard to believe that a reporter -would allow so many undeserved press lines without doing the same for | all the other candidates. If the reporter is to be credible, it is necessary to give the views of ail the can- didates on the subject. Picking out one candidate for the spotlight is unfair to the readership and irresponsi- ble journalism. Ron Komm West Vancouver Dear Editor: On Saturday, Oct. 23, at around 3 p.m. while getting out of my car in front of the cred- it union in Lynn Valley, | accidentally dropped two $100 bills I intended to deposit in my account. As [ left my car, I glanced back and saw a young Asian woman quickly bend down and pick something up and took me in the eye as she did so. As I was by now in front of my car I didn’t see what she picked up and so didn’t think much of it. In the credit union | remarked to a woman that I thought I had dropped the money or left it at home, and she said that she had just seen the young woman shedding light Dear Editor: We note that in Mr. (Lionel) Lewis’ letter which was published in the Oct. 20 edition of your newspaper, Mr. Lewis neglected to inform you that he is, and has been tor some time, member of our organization.
