Casiiano/Delbrook Highlands THE phrasing of the question suggests that this is a North Shore issue, and that any upgrades would be paid for in local taxes. In fact, tiquid waste manage- ment is handled on a regional basis by the Greater Vancouver Regional District (past GVRD taxes have seen North Snore tax payers contribute to sewage upgrades at the Annacis [sland and Lulu plants). Lions Gate and Iona island sewage piants are primary treat- 4 yeporter ment plants and the GVRD is presently reviewing options to upgrade both operations. The cost: approx- imately $100 million and $300 million respectively. Cost in increased taxes: in the order of $100 a year. The GVRD has stated it would ! prefer not to upgrade to a still higher standard and remove ammonia from the dis- charge of all four plants. The cost if they did: likely a further $209 million, or anoth- er $50 a year in taxes, The GVRD is hoping the federal government will amend Fisheries Act prohibiti -s rather than have to meet required discharge standards.
