Stitching together the pieces By Layne Christensen Fashion Editor THE Canadian Craft Museum’s two current exhibitions offer a fasci- nating look at fibre art, new and old. Pani & Fili showcases the decorative breads and textiles of Italy. Handmade laces, embroideries and weavings from the turn of the century to modern day reveal the intricacy of the art. Included in the exhi- bition is a macrame lace neck- lace from 1915. The companion show, Neo Sutchery, hi lights the handi- work of six fibre artists: Joanna Rogers, Fiona Macleod, Paula and Marylou Taakvon, who are graduates of Capilano College’s textile arts program, and two senior artists who are noted in the textile arts field — Anne Love, a West Vancouver resident, and Lesley Richmond, the highly influen- tial teacher of the first four. All artists work with overstitch, using free machine embroidery. Anne Love has used the technique to embellish wear- ables — a child’s jacker, a “non-knit” sweater, an apron ~~ with scripted text, and to stitch together a bathing suit made entirely of soap labels. From Lesley Richmond’s Power Dressing series are sev- eral trapunto embroidered works, including the framed portraits of Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth. Joanna Rogers’ hangings address sex and gender issues. Paula Grasdal’s reveal a fascina- tion with the texture of bark and the transparency of skin. Fiona Macleod’s mural is reminiscent of abstract art. And finally, © Marylou Trinkwon’s playful works from her student days include a quilted plastic purse ¢embell- ished with touching hands and a sculpture that pays tribute to the children’s building block.
