J | THIS summer, when most British Columbians are enjoying their summer vacations, the Red Cross would like to remind everyone that the need for blood never takes a vacation, Each week hospital paticats are counting on their fellow British Columbians to donate 2,000 units of blood. Up to four patients can benefit from ‘elay each blood donation. After fully testing the blood, the Red Cross, depending on hospital requirements, may produce: packed red cells, platelets, plasma and specialized blood products for B.C. patients. Some donors’ red blood celts may be used to treat patients who have suffered blood Joss due to injury or surgery, or to treat anemia, Matelets may be used to control bleeding or be part of @ cancer patient’s treatment. The plasma portion of a donar’s bload donation could be used to treat burn patients and those who have lost large quantities of blood, or the donor’s plasma could be processed into other specialized blood products such as Intravenous Immune Globulin which is used for the treatment of immune disorders. The Red Cross encourages all healthy individuals between the ages of 17 and 60 to make a summer blood donation.
