by the Vancouver Club is a rather
different matter. More like a death
wish, in fact.

the needed majority) voted to admit
women is that.a financial shot in
the arm from new, hitherto unac-
ceptable members is urgently need-
ed to save the club from going
belly-up. Otherwise, one wonders
whether skirts in the members’
lounge would ever have been con-
templated.

But just a minute, Mr. Minister,
before you smite these sexist and
racist deviants! Have you ever con-
templated the real meaning of

“freedom of association” as guaran-—

teed by the Charter of Rights?

Surely if it means [am free to
associate with anyone 1 want to, it
must also mean I’m free NOT to
associate with anyone if | DON’T
want to. In short, freedom of asso-
ciation clearly involves freedom to
discriminate between companions |
welcome and companions [don’t .

Morcover, if that’s true in the
singular, it must be true in the plur-
al. Meaning private groups are just
as entitled as you and I to decide
who shall belong to them and who
shall not. If it makes them unpopu-
lar in some quarters or gets them
into financial trouble, the situation
is theirs, and theirs alone, to correct |
or to ignore.
