Good for Gordon

C "S LIBERAL party leader is upset-
ting the. president of the B.C.
! Federation of Labor. And that might
be good news for all those seeking some relief
*: from the encroaching socialist-unionist agen-
sda promulgated by Victoria. -

’ The subject: Bill $4, the NDP’s anti-busi-

-ness, anti-democracy Labor. Relations Code.
- The feedback: growing public support fer
. the provincial Liberal party. |

Gordon Campbell is rightly advocating
major changes to'Bill 84. B.C. Fed boss Ken
Georgetti is “disturbed” that Campbell
_ would consider advocating such changes. |

But as anyone who is likewise concerned
about the gratuitous NDP-led mandatory
unionization of B.C. will tell you, Bill 84/is a
disturbing piece of provincial legislation that
weighs labor relations heavily in favor of
unions and against smal! business:

it has removed, for instance, the democra-
tic right of workers to vote by secret ballot on
union certification by automatically unioniz-
ing any operation if 55% of its employees
merely sign union cards.

Campbell wants to return the secret ballot
to working pecple; Georgetti does not.

The Liberal feader wants to address issues
of secondary boycotting and the use of
replacement workers. He also wants to deep-
‘six the NDP’s misnamed Fair Wage policy,
which is costing British Columbians an esti-
mated $100 million annually by artificially
inflating the price of government. construc-
tion jebs.

- Such talk also disturbs the B.C. Fed boss.

But it should be. encouraging the rest of
B.C.’s population to consider replacing the
NDP regime with a government that repre-
sents more than just big labor.

SAD THOUGH the com-
ment on humanity may. be,
nations are born in blood —
as the history of any nation
you care to pick quickly con-

’ firms.

Canada is no exception, Luckier
than most, we've been spared the
agony of civil war. Instead, our
country achieved nationhood
through the sacrifices of Canadians
— second to none in valor -— who
bled and died defending freedom
on foreign fields from Vimy Ridge
to Dieppe.

That fact, and the need for
today’s Canadians to appreciate it,
is stressed in a recent Financial
Post column by its editor, Diane
Francis. Next year, she reminds us,
is the 50th anniversary. of the allied
victory in the Second World War
and Canada’s outstanding part in it.

During the five years of war
Canada’s population hovered
around a mere !1 million. Yet an
incredible 1,029,000 men and
women enlisted in the armed forces
and merchant navy. Of those,
45,600 never came home and
another 100,000 were wounded in
action.

For the three out of four
Canadians born since 1945 —
weaned on the fiasco of Vietnam
and tiresome brush-fire conflicts in
distant parts of the globe — war is
a dirty word, period.

The vast majority of today’s
Canadians aged 50 and younger —-
have no grasp of war as sometimes
being a pure life-or-death struggle
of good versus evil.

That, of course, precisely
describes the 1939-45 conflict. If
the Allies had not defeated Hitler,
his tyranny would have dominated

- the world. But for Canada’s post-

war generations the TRUE story of
their nation’s proud role in the vic-
tory of good over evil remains
untold,

So says former defence minister .
and veteran Barney Danson, who

_ has launched an ambitious project

to set the record straisht: a $2.1
million, seven-part TV documen-
tary entitled No Price Too High, to
be aired during next year’s 50th
anniversary celebrations. .

It would also be distributed in
video form to all schools and ‘
libraries.

Granted, there’s already been no
lack of dramatized documentaries
on the war. But like The Valour
And The Horror and Dieppe, they
virtually all suffer from a subjective
or biased interpretation of facts.
Not least because most are the
work of people with no direct
involvement in the war, or who
were not even born at the time.

Danson’s concept is radically
different. The production:would use
no dramatizations or fictitious dia-
logue. It would focus on actual
wartime footage and sulls; and on
interviews with participanis, credi-
ble observers and historians. The
format would follow that of the
brilliant PBS sevies or the

‘American Civil War.

“We want the story to be told in
a timeless fashion and to be the
definitive story of Canada’s partici-
pation, filled with passion and
humanity,” he says.

As Diane Francis notes, No
Price Too High would also docu-
ment the socio-economic revolution
the war years triggered — by wans-
