These exhibitions exploring ‘tear culture’? examine the rela- tionship cars have to our com- munities, our imagination and our culture. Vehicles of Desire: Muscle Cars as Metaphor (July 19-Ang. 30) Before emission controls and the gas crunch, the ‘‘muscle car’’ reigned in the hearts, minds and garages of North America’s youth. This exhibition takes an unusual look at these cars as art, as metaphors of power and as a culture within themselves. Period advertisements, accessories and actual ‘“‘muscle cars’’ will be ex- amined in the detailed information panels accompanying the exhibiti- nm. Enthusiasts of powerful cars will appreciate the show’s lineup: a Chrysler ‘‘Hemi"’ Satellite and 1970 T/A Challenger 340-6 pack, a 1967 Oldsmobile 4-4-2, a 1969 American Motors ‘‘big block’’ Javelin, and the very rare 1968 Shelby Cobra Mustang GT500KR convertible by Ford. Motors. This exhibition will be of interest to motor enthusiasts, as well as those interested in esthgtics and issues affecting contemporary culture. Headlighting: Photographs by Thaddeua ‘Holownia (July 19- Sept. 8) . Ordinary people with their ex- traordinary vehicles are the sub- jects portrayed in Holownia’s black and white photographs. His images are the result of several years of work and research across North America. Holownia makes Car history in the making. THE FIRST gasoline- ‘powered automobile in North America was built and .driven in 1893 by Charles and Frank Duryea. In 1900 the Women’s Home Companion proclaimed, “The displacement of the horse, if it is to come, will certainly mean cleaner streets, and far less noisy ones.”’ _ Automobile manufacturers presented the car as a social mechanism capable of driving out, physically and metaphorically, the demons of old thinking. However - in 1907, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson held the automobile responsibie for spreading ‘‘social~- istuc reeling’ within America. Then in the 1920s, the car was charged with being a ‘Devil Wagon"’ as well as being ‘’... a Kiwanis host THE KIWANIS Club of North Vancouver is pres- enting its annual Day In Scotland on Sunday, August 9 from 1] a.m. to 6 p.m. The event will feature Highland dancers, Scottish country dancing, pipers and pipe bands, Rob Stuart and his band, the Vancouver Fid- his photographs using paper nega- fives and an old-fashioned, targe-format 8°"x 20° Gundlach-Manhattan banquet- type camera. _ Realizing that the car has become a common denominator of the 20th century experience, Holownia says: “The car is the culture, and even if you don’t drive, you've got a_ relationship with it somewhere."’ Holownia’s visual essay is more than a lament | for a permanent record of things in our society, it is a depiction of the changes wrought to the urban landscape by the automobile. Fred Dougtas’ Fictional Cars (July 19-Sept. 7) Fanciful vehicles have been dreamed of. and made since the invention of the wheel. The unusual sculptures in this exhib- ition are freed from the restric- tions of practicality and function. Douglas hopes that ‘‘their whimsy undoes the truth or belief that form follows function, probably just to replace it with the belief that form follows desire.’’ Carved from wood, decorated with illu- sionistic paintings of fields and flowers, or with velvet-like flock- ing, or shattered glass-like glitter, these are truly vehicles for the imagination! AUTO! BIOGRAPHIES! (July 19-Aug. 30) Everyone has a great car story. Do you remember learning to drive, your first car or family road trips? Triumphs over adver- sity, humor, adventure and ‘first loves’’ are expressed in words and pictures in this exhibition testify- ing to the important role cars play in our daily fife. Photos and stories submitied by the general public make up this participatory exhibition. house of prostitution on wheels.”' In 1955 a total of $249,858,588 was spent on automobile advertis- ing. Because of cars we have suburbs, malls and drive-in res- taurants. By the year 2000 more than 536 million passenger cars will be owned in the world. For many countries the automobile industry is irretrievably tied to their na- tional economy. In 1982 one out of every six jobs in the United States was related to motor vehi- cles, in 1977 almost 30% of all retail trade was by automobile dealers. The Museum of Modern Art in New York celebrated the automobile as act in 1951. In 1968 ».2 Vancouver Art Gallery held an exhibition of custom cars.
