Sunday, September 15, 1991 - Norttiy Shore News -— 44 Heading out for the great beyond WE’RE ABOUT io set off on an unusual trip for us. Where are we going? Don’t know for sure. How ‘ong are we Don’t know that, either. Unfortunately, my new van won't be here in time to take it so it’s Brian’s pig that we drive. i'm used to travelling very light. Not this time! I'm taking my wpewriter, my own pillow, as many pairs of shoes as I like and two coats. Air travel turns you into a tur- tle, carrying everything you own on your back or at the end of your arm. This time, | can turn the back seat of the car into an office. I can give you a rough idea of what we have planned, but any- thing goes. We know we’re going to Seattle. At that point, we may turn left. [ suspect our next major destination will be Salt Lake City. Why? 1! love the place. Brian doesn’t but he’s being agreeable. Besides, we intend to spend a bit of time trying to figure out who the McCreadies really were. All we have is some vague rumors but all we know for sure is that Brian’s grandmother arrived in Victoria in the early 1900s with four kids. Did she come from Ottawa? We've been told so. There is no question that she was anything but a lovely, respectable little Scottish lady. Where was Daddy? No one seems to know. The Latter Day Saints (Mor- mons) have the finest centre in the world for tracing gencalogies and we're headed right there. The service is free but even if there were a fee involved, we feel it’s worth it. If one family mystery isn’t enough, there’s another on my side. I, too, have a set of grand- staying? Barbara NicCreadie TRAVELWISE parents fogged in mystery. Fortunately, all our ainysteries appear to be centred in the English-speaking world so our knowledge of geography should be adequate. What do peopie do when their ancestry comes from countries that no longer exist? Well, so much for Salt Lake Ci- ty. When I get through dragging Brian around he'll be happy to get in the car and go ANYWHERE. I want to go to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Why? Don’t know. Never been there. Like the name. Isn’t this fun? I also want to go to Denver for lunch. No, I don’t want a genuine Denver Sandwich. ! want to have lunch at the Brown Hotel and probably stay the night there. It will be wonderful to go to Denver and not have to fight that awful airport. Oh, yes, I know they’ve fixed it up. Sure. As far as I'm concerned, the only way to fix that place is with a wrecker’s ball, but who asked me? I suspect our next stop might be Vegas (lots of little stops . be- New arts members to speak at meeting THE NORTH Vancouver Com- munity Arts Counci} wants to in- troduce three new faces to the North Shore public. I'd sooner gamble in Reno, but we might hit that too. i was told that if f ever want to see the famous Seigfried and Roy animal show, I'd better get on with it. One of the stars is said to be very ill. Brian’s seen it and swears it’s the best) stawe show he’s ever seen. Every time I've been to Vegas ve been strangled by green felt and wouldn't have turned around if Frank Sinatra was singing at the next table. [ know for sure that we're visiting friends in Pearblossom, CA, and that we're going to the Dodger’s game on the 28th. I've got an old friend to visit in La Habra, too. Next general destination is the California fairly silly because neither of us likes wine very much. But there's a winery in Santa Barbara vicinity that makes one hell of a dessert wine, unavailable in Canada. I’m going to try and track it down. And, San Francisco. Brian has two musts for that city — Alcatraz and Cafe Sport. We took the kids to Alcatraz when they were little — they loved it and so did we. Gotta go back. The Cafe Sport serves the best Sicilian food I've ever tasted. A column a few years ago sent a lot of you there and | got raves and thanks for passing on the tip. Also, [I've been told that the column is glued to the till at Cafe Sport and I want to rip it off if the standards have dropped. Hope they haven't! It’s such an easy drive over the Donner Pass to Reno that we'll do it if we aren't too broke.
