ENSURING OUR FUTURE Nor'h On August 28, 1990 the Milk Jugs Plastic Pop Bottles & Wednesday. October 3, 1990 — North Shore News - 37 YOU WERE ASKING? Going Green queries answered RESPONSE TO the first Go- ing Green on the North Shore calendar has been en- thusiastic, insightful ... and sometimes puzzled. Participants were asked to send in the top part of their three-month calendar, which covered June, July and August, to Environment Canada, describing their in- volvement and listing any problems they may have encountered while trying to reduce their waste. The fol- lowing questions were asked by some of the respondents. They were forwarded to North Shore Recycling Coordinator Al Lynch. Q. ‘‘Is ‘organic’ garbage callection possible? It’s hard to composi when one doesn’t have a garden.” Lynch: ‘‘We're working in con- junction with the GVRD on a cen- tral composting site for tree bran- ches, leaves and grass clippings. It would be used by commercial landscapers and peopie who have toa much material far a backyard compost. Beverage & Food Cans “As far as kitchen wastes ga, try finding a Compost system that doesn’t require a garden. Visit the Still Creek Compost Demonsira- tion Garden in Burnaby, or call Ci- ty Farmer (685-5832) for ideas on composting in a small space or apartment.” Q. “Will mixed paper, mix- ed plastic and cardbeard ever be accepted at the North Shore recycling depots? The depots should be staffed and made to look more presentable, too.” Lynch: “After the blue box program is successfully under way, we'll better know what volumes we'll be left dealing with at the drop-off depots. At that point, we can decide what other materials we would be able to accept. “While we are hoping to have a corrugated cardboard drop-off point designated within the next few months, there are no plans at the moment to add more plastics to our drop-off depots or pick-up program. There are no viable local markets, and the cast of shipping plastics out of the province is pro- hibitive. “We will consider adding other recyclables such as mixed paper, used oil, aluminum, etc. And, yes, the depots will more than likely be staffed so we can make sure peo- ple aren‘t misusing them.” Q. What do we do with the lids on glass jars and botiles? Lynch: ‘Throw them away! They contaminate the load of glass. and aren't made of a metal that is recyclable.” Q. Do 1 have to take the labels off glass jars?) What about the neckrings? Lynch: “Don’t worry about taking the labels off glass bottles or jars, just take them off cans. As far as neckrings go, give it the old col- lege try. Do the best you can, but even if they are too difficult to remove, the bottle can still be recycled.”" Do you have a question about local recycling dos and don'ts?
