Sponsored by the North Shore News, the short-course is geared for first time triathtetes with an 800-metre pool swim, a 20-km cy- cle and a 5-km run. “It’s a perfect iength. If you’ve got a reasonable length of fitness — and you don’t have to be a super jock — and you have a rea- sonable level of competence in each event, you can do it,” McAdam says of the triathlon which will be based at Ron An- drews on Monday, May 21. Although not of the born-again fanatical conformed smoker breed, McAdam is serious about reaching the goal he’s set for himself. Gone is his old hacker 10-speed, replaced with a racing bike and new safety equipment. He tries to train daily but concedes he’s been a fair-weather cyclist and runner. He’s also joined the Masters Swim Club at Ron Andrews to give him an extra edge in the pool. Another big motivator for McAdam has been some of the clinics leading up to the short- course triathlon. The clinics have given him a network of triathlete friends to train with as well as taught him techniques te help him train more efficiently and effec- tively. From here on in it’s just hard work and practice. “I know that I have to get a lit- ue bit more regimented. My goal is to do each of the three sports three times a week,’’ he says, adding that he’s going to focus on doing two of the three sports back-to- back this month. One thing McAdam hadn’t ex- pected to thrive on to any great measure is the competitive nature of the sport. ‘My first reason for doing it was primarily fitness; Now Pm realizing that one of the things I hadn’t had for a few years is the competitive side. Now, even if it’s only an inner competition, it's more than just finishing.'’ He’s shooting for a time of one hour and 30 minutes and — only four months after quitting smok- ing — is enthusiastically looking forward to May 21. “It’s a hell of a challenge but it’s do-able.”’ For more information wn the You'll Never Know Till You Tri triathlon or the remaining two clinics (Transitions and Training and Tying It All Together), contact yace director Trish Hotme at 929- 15 - Wednesday, May 9, 1996 - North Shore News Not A Seat im The House 5% OFF *25% off all cycling shorts with the purchase of any new 1990 bicycle.
