for Michigan

WEST VANCOUVER’S Jason Jennings has recently signed a letter
of intent to join the Western Michigan University hockey team.
“We're very excited to have Jason join cur program,” said
Michigan coach Bill Wilkinson, ‘‘We think he not only brings a lot
of talent with him, but a lot of enthusiasm.” aan

Jennings played the 1988-90 season with the Richmond Sockeyes
in the B.C. Juaior Hockey League. The five-foot eleven, 170-'
pound right winger accumulated 80 points in €3 games with 35
goals and 45 assists. Jennings was selected to play in the league’s
all-star game for the west division. .

*<Jason has good offensive talents, but he is a good two-way
player,’’ Wilkinson said.

Local strikes
bowling gold

ALLISON GIBB and partner Nellie Ferguson of Port Moody cap-
tured a gold medal in the doubles event and a silver in the all-event
category at the Canadian Tenpin Federation national champion-
ships in Victoria on May 20-21.

Gibb, who bowls in two leagues at Brunswick Lions Gate Lanes
in West Vancouver, bowled 1101 for six games in the doubles
competition, for a 183 average. She averaged 172 overall for 18
games, coming second among 30 competitors.

Competitors in the national event were from B.C., Alberta,
Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. Gibb’s feagne
average is 159.

Soccer showdown
set in N. Van

TEAM B.C., the under-20 Carada Summer Games team, will be
hosting a four-team soccer showdown on June 9, 10 and 11th in
North Varcouver.

The preliminary games start at Lillooet and Boulevard Parks
Friday at 6:30 p.m., continuing Saturday at 10 a.m. snd Sunday at
2 p.m. at the same parks,

The other three squads participating are Vancouver Interna-
tional, Westminster Metro Ford and Queens Park Rangers.

The consolation final will be held at Kinsmen Stadium on June
11 at 2 p.m. followed by the winners final at 3:30 p.m.

Queens Cross
turns table

THE NORTH Shore Men’s Fastball League is heating up this
Ort.

Pemberton Station was in the lead 3-1 against Queens Cross with
a three run homer by Al Byner. Then Queens Cross third baseman
Howard Gilles took over, making several outstanding plays and
two key hits including the clincher with two out in the seventh inn-
ing for a Cross 4-3 victory.

Steve Wilcox of the Jack Lonsdale Canadians crushed a sixth
inning home run that put the Canadians ahead of the Chailengers
for a 4-3 win.

Breaking a two game losing streak was Tugs Pub, with a come-
back from a first inning 3-0 deficit to defeat Extra Old Stock 5-3.
Tugs offense came from its top feur batters — Mike Minchin,
Glenn Johnsen, Larrry Gouthro and Dark Brinham — who, com-
bined, were eight for 12 and scored four of the runs.

Gymnasts flip
to wins

NORTH SHORE gymnasts returned from the recent Canadian
Gymnastic Championships in Edmonton with a number of wias.

Competing in the open division for the first time was Keith
Lockitch, 18, who won a bronze medal in the floor exercise with 2
score of 8.55. He placed seventh overall, with a total of 44.30.

Senior gymnast Mike Lockitch, Keith’s brother, scored a high
9.10 for a fifth place finish in the optional floor exercises but fell
during a pommel! horse dismount and broke his foot. The Leckit-
chs are from West Vancouver Recreation Centre.

“‘high performance’? where Canada’s top 26 gymmasts compete —

NORTH SHORE high schools are
definitely back on track in the
overall provincial track and field
scene after sterling team and indi-
vidual efforts (see High School
Scoreboard, page 20) in the 22nd
B.C. meet at Swangard on the
weekend wiped out relatively
disappointing 1988 performances.

Until last year’s overail third
place by Sentinel, the North Shore
had never failed to have a school
win or place second in the team
standings since 1977 and had seen
no fewer than six different schools
reach the top seven during that
time.

This time Sentinel again took
third behind Queen Elizabeth of
Surrey with 177 and Barnaby Cen-
tral with 13512, but increased their
total by nine to 74 points, as head
coaches Pauline Hedberg — who
moved over from West Vancouver
this year — and Glen Close plus
nine assistant coaches, put together
a great season.

The Spartans would have done
better had Ryan Clark been able to
achieve the impossible task of be-
ing in two places at once.

The key to Sentinel’s tennis team

tempted to be at both UBC where

Sentinel was winning the B.C. title
and at Swangard for the 400m,
and the 4x100m and 4x400m
relays. :

He was able to fit in only one
heat of a relay, but the teams

‘finished fifth and sixth even

without him.

Luke Meyer who added a first in
the long jump and.thirds in the
high jump and 110m hurdles to go -
with his decathlon victory the week
before, and Ian Henson who com-
