Athletes play in China ELEVEN MEMBERS of Capilano Collcge men's soccer team are off to China this summer in prepara- tion for the Canada Summer Games being held August in Saskatoon. Travelling team members in- clude: Brad Baker, Ray Pang, Rod Schenoni, Eamonn Ward, Rob Ciccone, Mario Montaglioni, Jason Bermudez, Stefano Mat- tarollo, Jason Charles, and coaches Joe facobellis and Vince Alvanc. The China tour is scheduled for July 9 to 23, including matches in Shanghai and Bejing. Baseball leaque season opens MORE THAN 400 young baseball players and their parents watched Mark Roberts of the Red Sox T- Ball Division throw the first pitch to officially open the Forest Hills Baseball League season at Eldon Park last weekend. The diversity of one of the North Shore’s ‘‘biggest’’ little leagues was obvious when the first pitch was caught by Dan Davies, the 1[8-year-old catcher of the Forest Hills big league team. Dick Phillips, assistant general manager of the Vancouver Cana- dians, was again on hand to offer encouragement to all the aspiring baseball players. Kelly Paris, third baseman for the Vancouver Canadians, was also on hand to participate in the opening ceremonies. Forest Hills League has been in operation in Capilano for over 20 years, The league is comprised of 33 teams, ranging in age from the five-year-old T-ballers to the 18- year-old big leaguers. Home games are played at Can- yon Heights School, Cleveland Park on Nancy Greene Way, Eldon Park and Norgate Park on most week nights and Sunday afternoons, Opening day games saw Michael Meacher, Colin McLeod and Kasey Whitman pitch Stengs to a 19-3 victory over Grouse Mountain Resorts. Danny Elliott and Chad Webber each had three hits and scored two runs in the winning cause. Pitching staff for Grouse were Jason Allan, Sean Anderson, Mat- thew Anderson and Jonathon Pediow. The other opening day game saw Whitman Electric win 10-7 over Mac’s Convenience Stores. Winning pitchers were Adam Spence and Andrew Johnson had three S/O’s and five S/O’s respec- tively, Malika Ulmi had three hits, An- drew Newton two hits and Adam Spence two hits for the winners. Scott Richmond and Sam Issari pitched for Mac’s. Dancy Brooks hit three for four, Alan Osanlou and Eric Worth both went two for three.
