The green tide rolls in another
new wave of pop drawing on tradi-
tional Irish music.

The Dublin-distilled spirit of the
band, nurtured by transplanted
Scottish singer-song writer Mike
Scott, is fortified with the inclu-
sion of Galway musicians.

Side one, follows, in part, the
gospe! road travelled by Water-
boys’ kindred spirit Van Morrison.
Side two, the Galway side, is a
rambling sampling of unadulterat-
ed folk balladry. The side is
highlighted by Scott’s rollicking
Bang On The Ear and an adapta-
tion of W.B. yeais’ sea-haunted
poem, The Stolen Child, sung by
Gatiway Gaelic singer Tomas
RicKeown.

Meanwhile back in Dublin, it’s

1985 and another band is born. By
the spring of 1986 A House tours
with the Waterboys and in 1987
the band records with British pop
star-maker John Peel.

mandolins or trilling penny whis-
tles here. What you get is pure
power pop in the vein of Wooden
Tops or early XTC. Lashing stuff,
thick with brainy anger — an orig-
inal soundtrack for the thinking
punk.

Burnished musical hooks and
barbed commentary about the big
issues and poxy journalists keep
the merry-go-round spinning fran-
tically for a solid 13 songs. Keen,
manic vibes from the Emerald Isle.
