Open house held at preschool

THERE IS something new on the grounds of
Highland Community School — a bright brown cedar
portable classroom.

The portable is the new home of the Village Parent
Participation Preschool. Thirty-two youngsters, ages
three and four, attend morning and afternoon classes
in this unit three days a week. In previous years, the
preschool occupied one of the regular school
classrooms.

The portable was purchased with funds raised by
the parents of the preschoolers. A grant of $15,000
was received from the Vancouver Foundation; the
provincial government contributed $5,000; the Bentall
Foundation provided $250; and the balance came
from fund-raising activities organized by parents. One

of the major ones, which netted $2,700, was the Sale
of the Season, a garage and bake sale, held last June.

The school district gave the preschool permission to
site the facility on the school grounds and the
municipality provided the appropriate permits and
services.

“It has been a labor of love,’’ said Village
Preschool president Wendy Evans. ‘Hours and hours
have been put in by parents. But what a wonderful
feeling to actually step into our bright new
classroom.”*

The public is invited to view the new facility at an
open house on Saturday, Dec. 10 from I to 3 p.m.
The portable is located on the northwest side of
Highlands Community School, 3150 Colwood Dr.,
North Vancouver.
