FACILITIES HAVE DETERIORATED Councils agree: fields dangerous NORTH VANCOUVER City and District councils have endorsed a recreation commission report which warns that the present state of North Vancouver school playing fields poses a health and safety threat to children and players. In an urgent meeting last week, both councils agreed with the report’s findings that schoo! play- ing fields in North Vancouver have seriously deteriorated due to pro- vincial cutbacks to the school board’s budget. An inspection of seven elemen- tary and secondary schools showed common problems such as inade- quate drainage, poor grading and boulders appearing above the sur- face of fields. The report states that $108,000 is needed to repair all the fields. The school board has already pro- vided $54,000. Ald. Ernie Crist said the amount of money needed is ‘relatively small,’’ but indicated that councils have not said whether or not they will provide any funds for the fields. He added that both believe “the ball is now in the school board’s court.’’ “Tf there is not sufficient funds then it’s up to the school board to scream at the provincial gov- ernment to give them more,’ said Crist. **The ministry of education would laugh its head off if the councils step in and give them (the school board) the money that it Stephen Russell North Vancouver It's entertaining and it should have After this many years it's a PNE tradition, hould PNE revive demo derby?
