BEAUTIFUL CARPET comes in
a variety of colors, patterns and
textures. Some are less expensive
and some are more, but which is
right for you?

Before you can decide, you need
a working knowledge of basic
carpet construction and textures.

This information will help you
select the carpet that best suits
your needs, by matching the right
carpet texture to the right room.

Most carpets are tufted. This
means that hundreds of little pieces
of yarn are inserted into the back-
ing material by a row of needles. A
backcoating, which may reinforce
the original backing material or
serve as an adhesive for another
layer of backing, is applied to lock
the yarn in place.

Although almost 95 per cent of
all carpet made today is tufted, up
until 1950 most carpet was woven
of wool. This is an expensive,
time-consuming process using a
relatively expensive fibre.

Today, fibre producers have
developed nylon. By far the most
popular carpet fibre, it offers the
same rich fook of wool with
greater durability and at less ex-
pense.

The development of nylon has
gone through five stages, or
generations, and each generation
has brought the consumer a more
advanced product. First genera-
tion, or basic nylon, carpet fibre
was developed in the 1950s.

CARPET TEXTURE influences carpet performance. Basic textures in-
clude (clockwise from upper left corner), cut pile, with its smooth, rich
surface; level loop pile, a pebbly texture keeps soil near the carpet surface
where it is casy to clean; multi-level loop pile, which creates durable, tex-
ture patterns that are excellent for active arcas; frieze, also called textured

fish will help develop the proper
biological conditions necessary to
maintain a fully stocked aquarium.

After three to four weeks,
assuming everything is fuctioning
properly. you can then go ahead
and add the rest of the fish.

Aquarium maintenance is a lot
simpler than people think. Every
two weeks a partial water change
(not greater than 20 per cent) by
siphoning the water from the bot-
tom of the aquarium is all that is
required.

On a monthly basis, your filter
will require minimal maintenance.
That’s all there is.

Following this simple routine,

* Level loop pile — The carpet
surface resembles a hooked rug
with yarn formed into loops of
equal heights that have both ends
anchored into the carpet backing.

The smooth, tight surface of this
carpet texture helps to prevent dirt
from reaching down into the fibre,
keeping it near the surface where it
can be cleaned away easily.

It offers excellent wear perfor-
mance for heavy traffic areas, and
is often styled in heather or tweed
looks. It can have tiny, tight loops

should be fed and a good quality
flake food will provide a complete
diet for almost all fish.

carpets,

* Multi-level loop pile —- Often
called sculptured carpet, it com-
bines yarn loops of varying
heights. It also offers excellent
wear performance for active areas,
and can be styled as tiny tight
loops or large, loose Berber cf-
fects.

Its multi-level texture makes
possible many interesting tracery
patterns and styling effects. It is
often done in tweedy multicolors
that help to hide dirt and soil, and
it complements modern, contem-
porary, casual and eclectic style
furnishings,

* Cut piie — This is loop carpet
with the top of the loops cut off,
leaving individual yarn tufts. This
texture includes many of today’s
most popular carpet styles, such as
velvet plushes (carpets with very
little yarn twist to break up its high
surface) and saxonies (plush
carpets with twist in the yarn for
durability).

Best used in moderate traffic
areas, all velvet and saxony cut

piles provide luxury and a more
format look in a room.

¢ Cut and loop pile — A com-
bination of plush and loop piles,
it’s often done by varying pile
heights and using shearing tech-
niques to create unusual carved
styling effects fike random = or
geometric patterns.

* Textured plush — Also called
frieze (free-say), this is a type of
cut pile carpeting with such tight
twist in the yarn that each tuft
distinctly crinkles.
