But it is just as true that many of us who cruise this area also harbor some sense of uneasiness about the rate that we are losing much of the natural beauty to be found in this ground, While you may be able to grow a tree in 80, or 180 years, it takes centuries — 800 to 1,000 or more years — to develop a forest. A true forest is a compiex system —- so complex that we might best con- sider it to be a single organism. In a mature forest we will not find the planted monocultures of trees all of the same age, but young trees all of the same age, but young trees surrounded by age old giants, and a web of mosses, shrubs, and flowering plants on the forest floor. While one may find 100-200 species in a replanted forest, you will find three to four times that many in an old growth forest, and some of these have their ecology inextricably wound around only these places. They are not found in YAMAHA THE WAY IT SHOULD BE. Teforested areas. same cruising . By AL WHITNEY Contributing Writer Old growth forests are enchanted places, a worthy destination for a cruising adventure, as any person who has walked the forests of the Queen Charlottes’ Windy Bay will testify. Surely our childrens’ children deserve these same kinds of vistas! To be able to walk in old forests, or to be able to study these places shouid not be the sole perogative of this generation. Just. as surely, we should be protecting those plants, birds, and animals that can only thrive in these kinds of forests. How many of us are aware of the threat to bald eagles, murrelets, peregrine falcons, and salmon that result from virtually.every clear cut? It is of in- terest to note that in Alaska the log- ging industry must leave a 20-yard radius uncut around any bald eagle nesting tree. No such legislation ex- ists or is contemplated in British Col- merCruise best selling stern drive in the world © NORTH SHORE umbia. I do not think that Americans value their eagles any more than Canadians, issues of national emblems aside. One of our twentieth-century dilemmas, which relates to this issue, is language. While the forest ecologist talks of mature forests, the forester (read forest engineer) talks of over mature forests, or even of decadent forests. The for- ester makes it sound as if some- thing has been wasted if we leave a forest alone, even though these are places that we truly do not yet understand. Foresters also speak of progressive clearcuts — mean- ing those cuts which are often a mountain wide, and half an inlet long — with the inherent implica- tion that this is some kind of a step forward. . It should be remembered that 30 years ago we were being told that the kind of ecological destruction that was occurring near Trail was a necessary part of a viable mining industry, We see now that this was false. People demanded that it change. See Preserve Page 62 ; ‘Authorized parts'and service dealer for the North-Shore SERVICE LTD.
