At Argyle, we recognize that this is {rue for young adults as well. But, we also recognize that being behind in some basic skills can have a very important effect on success in school. The Tutorial, Assistance and Special Education Programs are designed to provide in- dividual tutoring and small group instructions to students in need of improving their basic skills. For those students whose skills in reading, writing, spelling or studying are not as highly developed as_ they should (or could) be, the pro- grams offer ways to improve them. In a small group or in- dividually, a student is able to work On a program design- Learning ed to help develop” these necessary skills. For a Grade 8 student, this will likely be in the Tutorial Program, or, if his or hes skills require more attention, the Learning Assistance Program. The long-established Tutornal Program has been copied by many high schools throughout B.C. It 1s design- ed to match a Grade 8 stu- dent with a senior student tutor. [tis usually taken for one hour a day, instead ot French 8. The tutors receive intensive training from Lear- 2 SELON TNR JANICE McLAUGHEEN, tutor, guides ning Assistance teacher Pat Winship, in how to assist and monitor the progress ot the Grade 8 student in language arts and study skills. In addition to providing one-to-one tutoring tin reading, writing and spelling, as needed, the tutor serves as a model and instructor for the tutee in good work and study habits. The tutor regularly checks on the tutee’s progress in these areas through monthly interviews with the regular class teachers. For many Grade 8 students, the Tutorial Program has prowid- ed a rewarding and effective learning experience, and the transition to secondary school has been made easier for them.
