The driver of the bus told the jury that the speedometer on the bus had not worked for at least 18 months, that some of the seats in the bus were con- nected to the plywood floor with sheet metal screws, that he was not told the bus had a separate front braking system, and that the front braking system was not working on the day of the crash. Kerry Smith also said the bus had been in and out of the company shop because of a broken frame and alternator problem. AN AD-HOC group of church and women’s groups and representatives of B.C.’s 10 magazine distribution companies is asking the provincial Attorney- General’s department to set up a= three-member com- mittee to screen magazines coming into the province. The request went to the provincial government this week, following a meeting of the representatives and after Expo ‘86 chairman Jim Pattison announced he was selling Mainland Magazine Ltd., because of ‘‘shock’’ over some of the magazines it distributes. Legislation adopted in B.C. last August gives police the right to order a blood sample taken with or without the consent of the driver involved. An amendment that would add a similar requirement to the Criminal Code is before the House of Commons now but has not been adopted.
