years, the annual task of
looking after the needs of
those children goes on.

The majority of the
students are headed for
schools in the North Van-
couver area where enrol-
ment at the end of the last
school year stood at a whop-
ping 15,672 students. About
as many are expected the
first Tuesday after Labour
Day.

well-rounded and challeng-
ing educational system.

B.C.’s school curriculum
has long been recognized as
one of the finest in the world
and North Vancouver’s com-
bination of regular class-
rooms and special education
projects and services reflects
that well.

The district has always, in
fact, fared well in scholastic
comparisons with the pro-
vincial average and other
districts throughout B.C.,
whether it be the disciplines
of mathematics, science and
English or on the sporting
fields.

Beyond that is the growing
emphasis on parental in-
volvement in the schools. A
number of Parent Advisory
Councils exist that work
closely with the individual
schools

and a_e growing
number of parent
volunteers working in the
schools.

_ West Vancouver's school
district boasts the same level
of commitment throughout
the system. |

But they're looking for-
ward to the start of this year

One, forced by an age
bulge among the estimated
5,200 students, is'a change in
school alignments. Three
secondary. schools’ will
operate with students from
grade seven to grade 12 in-
stead of the more traditional
eight to 12 category. That’s
proyiding students and
educators with potential pro-
blems and the opportunity
for some educational excite-
ment.

The addition of the grade
sevens to the high schools,
sees seven elementary
students lose their tradi-
tionally senior students and
they'll now cover the grades
kindergarten to grade six.
Three primary schools also
operate, with students from
kindergarten age to Grade
three.

The second addition
comes in the French Immer-
sion program, where grade
five has now been added.
Enrollment in the program is
at 270 students, many of
whom have been with the
program since its inception
and through the annual addi-
tion of another grade.

So, while you might not be
ready to send your children
back to school -- or to go
back. yourself -- the schools
