B2 - Wednesday, July 28, 1982 - North Shore News hee Let’s hear it for by Andy Fraser Association. They can do more damage to the image of the game by one little action than can any number of diligent detractors. Last week, in their somewhat less than infinite wisdom, the worthies of the CSA refused to sanction a game between Glasgow Celtic and Dinamo Zagreb of Yugoslavia because it was not part of a tournament. The game, to have been played in Toronto, was to have been an_ exhibition match because in an earlier tournament that week, Celtic had been knocked out meaning that they would not have played the Yugoslavs, disappointing a number of fans. What possible rationale the CSA has for refusing consent scant hours before the scheduled kickoff is beyond the ken of. mere mortals. Mind you, at times the CSA itself is beyond that ken. Good grief, it’s the world game and we“éertainly don't need a bunch of pontifical, pretentious bureaucrats putting the boots. to something which could only enhance the image of the game in this country. Of course, maybe those who came up with this and foolish the Canadian Soccer wizardly littl move are afraid that the game will become too big for them and they'd have to forgo the control and _ so-called prestige of their positions to others who were anxious to see the game expand. Such petty and foolish actions have no place in the wider framework of the game. ose The one big problem with pro sport is that kids often tend to emulate what the pros do. Most of the time. there’s nothing wrong with it. For example, anyone who watched Peter Lorimer in action last Wednesday night, would have witnessed one of Keg joins Sea Festivites A CHALLENGE by the B.C. Wheelchair Athletes to staff of the North Shore Keg restaurants resulted in a hilarious water polo game during recent Sea Festival activities. Billed as the World's Largest Water Polo Game, the match featured the six- foot high Keg ball in the Second Beach pool July 15. It soon was apparent that the wheelchair athletes far outclassed their opposition, so the teams reformed to become shirts versus skins. With the new arrangement, the teams battled to a 5-5 tie and overcame minor irritants such as high winds, cold MT. That would be a good thing to emulate. But they could also have seen Earl Weaver shove an umpire in the face during a baseball game. Or, going back a bit they could have watched any number of hockey players take it out on’ referees. Great stuff, especially when the offending players and managers get away with it. Not something to emulate. A big indicator that pro sport can get off track is that recent incident with Weaver. What kind of sport is it where a manager can make.a fool out of a game official and abuse him physically then end up with a week suspension and a _ $2,000 fine? And what is especially frustrating is that the commentators don’t put Weaver down for his action. The whole thing is treated as though it’s all part of the normal game. Something that kids watch and naturally think is okay. It’s not okay. Not for kids and not for adults. This kind of reoccurring nonsense is much like dancing animals on the sidelines. A diversion that has nothing to do with the sport except covering up other flaws.
