BS - Sunday, July 25, 1982 - North Shore News CLIFFORD, BALJET Double win at Westwood A WIN apiece was the order of the day at Westwood last weekend for North Shore racers Michael Clifford and Peiter Baljet. Baljet started the weekend off by setting an all-time sedan qualifying record in his Camaro Saturday. Sponsored by Canadian Uniflite yachts, the car is professionally prepared by Gerry Charlesworth and John Hempsey, also of the North Shore. Clifford also had a good day, setting the day's fastest time for the Formula Ford with his 1982 Van Diemen. Sunday saw Baljet vir- tually uncontested in his race, leading from start to finish. Baljet anticipated strong competition from Toivo Heinonen, a former Canadian rally champion, but opened up a five-second lead on him within the first couple of laps. Midway through the race Heinonen retired with mechanical problems and Baljet had a clear path to the victory, lapping almost the entire remaining field of cars. Baljgt is also sponsored by Richmond Honda and LG73. He plans to compete in the Canadian GT-i cham- pionships in Manitoba this September. Clifford, meanwhile, had a rougher start to his race Sunday. Although he qualified for the _ pole position, he started at the pack of the grid because he failed to report to pre-grid on time. With the race in progress, Clifford moved solidly through the field into sixth and was preparing to move up still more when an ac- cident occurred. The remaining cars were grouped in fixed position behind a pace car while the ambulance came onto the track, and continued in this form for several laps before the race was re-started. Clifford then moved quickly into second place behind Burnaby’s Peter Keefe. After exchanging the W. Van cricketers lead 2nd division A NARROW victory last weekend consolidated the West Vancouver Cricket Club First XI’s hold on their division’s number one position. Wescan succumbed to West Van at Hugo Ray park in second division play. The win was the fifth of the season for the locals out of ten matches. Fine bowling and fielding were the hallmark of the game. Wescan needed only 102 runs to win but were frustrated by Steve Miller (3 wickets for 26) and Edward Clark (4 for 39) who kept the visitors’ scoring = op- portunities to a minimum. Earlier in the match, the West Van batting line-up scrambled to 101 with only Basil Statia (22) and Vipin Patel (15) making any significant inroads on the Wescan attack. Results were not available at News press time from an interlocking division game between West Van and first division Brockton Point Saturday.
