Dear Editor: In British Columbia, an average of 250 people are killed in alcohol related traffic accidents each year. This shocking statistic. was. brought to my attention when I attended a Traffic Safety Student Leadership Conference sponsored by ICBC ‘on October 29th and 30th. Four hundred students from all over the province came to.the conference to learn. about traffic safety. The main: point stressed was Dear + Editor: Through your columns, may-I thank the voters of North Vancouver City who took the trouble to come out on a rainy Saturday, and I particularly wish to thank those who supported me. As I stated in my campaign, I believe an alderman represents ALL the citizens, criminal penalties for im- paired driving’ are serious. Being convicted of driving with a blood-alcohol content exceeding .08% results in a $50 to $2,000 fine and/or imprisonment __ up to six . months, an automatic three months drivers licence suspension, and a criminal record. A second offence carries a * manditory jail sentence from 14- days to 1 and I invite citizens to use it freely. And while I am at it, Mr. Editor, I was very pleased at the large turn-out on November 11, at the Cenotaph. It was _ par- ticularly encouraging to sec several groups of children present, with their teachers. ving far the most serious problem onourhighways. . - . They seem to have been written by the same person as the samie gram- matical error occurs in each. One of the signatories is not on this year’s list of electors. I have had several con- structive conversations with intelligent and interested people on this subject since your original inaccurate report was published,: along with its “news” headline. Usually I pay no attention to insulting letters, but put them in context with their sources. After all, opinion is that exercise of the human will which allows” the unintelligent to arrive at a decision without adequate information. In this case, I want to set the record straight. I have GVRD terms of prepared for a Committee - before’ the Mainland it is failing - in its duty, in my opionion. However,’ we had better know the facts population pressures of 2002 force precipitate action. One is never popular for thinking ahead, as this involves change, and some people feel themselves threatened by change, but it is an in- tegral part of my job. As for the present quality of Greater Vancouver's water, haven't the writers of the letters noticed that since October 31 they have been bathing in, and drinking a light brown soup full of suspended solids that neither London nor Los Angeles would tolerate?
