History is more than ju For a great many people, the very idea of taking a history course at college just for “fun” seems incredible. The very word “History” br- ings back memories of pages of dates, wars and succes- sions of kings (quick — who came before Henry FV?) that kept students yawning in their seats. With reason. But historians have come to realize that politics and dates are only a very small aspect of history. For in- Stance, even now with widespread literacy and communications, it's a good bet that what the Ayatollah did yesterday or Trudeau said this morning didn't af- fect or interest the average person much. Centuries ago politics never involved more than a very few. The majori- ty were affected by the same things that interest us — jobs, housing, religion, social stautus, morality, and so on. History must also be ap- proached with caution because it is biased by who writes it. Imagine, for in- stance, reading a history of Canada written by Farley Mowatt, and then one by the president of Standard Oil. “When studying history, students learn to read and think critically,” says in- structor Dr. Marlene LeGates. She will be teaching Women's History this spring, starting January 6 — a course that looks at one aspect of human history that has been all but ignored. Also starting in January are American History from 1865 to the present and Post- Confederation Canadian History, both of which offer a fascinating study and background to current events. Women's History will be held Tuesday and Thursday from 1 - 3:00, while the Canadian and American History have an evening sec- tion Tuesday from 6 to 10 and Thursday from 7 to 10 respectively.
